Seminar on “Intellectual Property Rights: Opportunities and Strategies” (IPR)

 

   
 

Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon organised a one-day seminar on “Intellectual Property Rights: Opportunities and Strategies” on 8th December 2012 in which subject experts and scientists from different institutions and agencies addressed the faculty members. The objective of the seminar was to create awareness amongst the faculty members about patent system particularly in India and to actively involve them in innovation and invention activities protecting their intellectual property rights.

The Guest-speakers Shri Govind Sharma, Head ( P&A), NRDC, New Delhi; Shri N. R. Meena, Assistant Controller, Patent Office, New Delhi; Shri R. P. Yadav, Patent Attorney, New Delhi; Shri Y. D. Panwar, Scientist, TIFAC, New Delhi and Shri V. K. Varun, Scientist “F” & Director(CPIO), DSIR, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of India, New Delhi enlightened the participants their views on different topics like Intellectual Rights & its scope, Patentable Inventions, Revocation of Patents, Copyright, International Patenting, Trade Marks, Trade Secrets, Geographical Indications, Industrial Designs, Utility Models etc.

Presenting the overview of Intellectual Property Rights, Shri Govind Sharma told that the innovation and creative expression of indigenous and local communities are intellectual property. He expressed that intellectual property includes the rights relating to literary, artistic and scientific works; scientific discoveries; industrial designs; trademarks; protection against unfair competitions etc.

Another speaker Shri. N.R. Meena talked on “Disclosure of Invention for Patent Protection”. Addressing the audience, he said that an invention means a new product or process involving an inventive step and capable of industrial application. He shared three conditions i.e. novelty, inventiveness and usefulness for an invention to be patentable. He also explained different concepts like Essential Patent Documents, Claims, Working of patents & Compulsory licensing, revocation of patents etc.

Shri R. P. Yadav conveyed his ideas on Indian Patent System. He explained that a patent system ensures that information on new invention is made available for eventual public use so as to encourage technical and economic development. He said that patents are of no value unless the commercial worth of the product or technology can be demonstrated. In the seminar, he discussed other topics like Patent specification, Patent cooperation treaty, Industrial designs, Utility patent etc.

Continuing the thoughts and ideas, Shri Y. D. Panwar delivered his talk on “Patenting in Engineering Sciences”. He said that any new and useful process, machine, composition of matter, software and methods of doing business may also be patented. The participants discussed the fundamentals in patenting, patent prosecution and business perspectives in patenting etc.

Shri V. K. Varun imparted his experiences and shared his views on different strategies and policies for patenting. In his talk on “Patent Information and Search Strategies for Patents”, he elucidated some relevant information on design patent, plant patent, patent harmonization and regional patents etc.

The seminar was useful to the participants as they learnt how to improve the quality of Research & Projects relevant to the patentability. The seminar provided not only a vibrant ambience but also invigorated the faculty members and researchers to excel in their respective areas of interest.

The seminar concluded with certificate- distribution and a vote of thanks by Dean Academics Prof. (Dr.) Onkar Singh who expressed his heart-felt gratitude to the guest- speakers, Hon’ble Principal, all HODs and the participants who contributed in making the seminar a great success.
