GUEST LECTURE ON MICROWAVE LINKS AND ITS PRACTICAL

APPLICATIONS ON 20 MARCH 14

 

Mr. Ajay Goyal GM Precision Electronics, Noida, delivered a guest talk on Microwave links and its Practical Applications” at Dronacharya College of Engineering on 20th March 2014.

The speaker covered the following salient points during his talk.

Salient Points:

1. Microwave Links: It is a communications system that uses a beam of radio waves in the microwave frequency range to transmit video, audio, or data between two locations, which can be from just a few feet or meters to several miles or kilometers.

2. Introduction to Microwave radio relay : It is a technology for transmitting digital and analog signals, such as long-distance telephone calls, television programs, and computer data, between two locations on a line of sight radio path.

3. How microwave links are formed: Because the radio waves travel in narrow beams confined to a line-of-sight path from one antenna to the other, they don't interfere with other microwave equipments, and nearby microwave links can use the same frequencies.

4.  Antennas used must be highly directional (High gain),.these antennas are installed in elevated locations such as large radio towers in order to be able to transmit across long distances.

5. Regulatory and licensing: License costs are usually linked with the size of spectrum occupied by the transmitter signal.

6. Microwave Radiation safety.

7.  Discussion on Properties of Microwave links like : Distance between microwave radio terminals and Terrain properties eg. The curvature of the Earth, bodies of water, cliffs, forests and snow. Frequency of operation, fading, dispersion and multipath distortion, size of antenna, feeding properties etc.

8. Management of microwave link if moisture exists inside waveguide.

9. Cost considerations in setting up of microwave links.

10. Proposed Uses: Microwave Power Transmission (MPT) is the most commonly proposed method for transferring energy to the surface of the Earth from solar power satellites or other in-orbit power sources. MPT is occasionally proposed for the power supply in beam-powered propulsion for orbital lift space ships. Even though lasers are more commonly proposed, their low efficiency in light generation and reception has led some designers to opt for microwave based systems.

11. Current Status: Wireless Power Transmission (using microwaves) is well proven. Experiments have been performed at Goldstone in California and more recently at Grand Bassin on Reunion Island. In 2012 a long range transmission experiment successfully transmitted 20 watts  upto 148 km  from a mountain on Maui to the main island of Hawaii.

12. He also discussed the various applications like point-to-point communication systems on the surface of the Earth, satellite communications and  deep space radio communications. Other parts of the microwave radio band are used for radars, radio navigation systems, sensor systems, and radio astronomy.

       

Conclusion : Overall the talk was very useful for the students as well as the faculty members. The components used in the microwave links were shown practically and all the queries of the students were well answered by the speaker.
