Two Week ISTE Workshop on “Database Management Systems”
 

Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT, Bombay) organised a two-week ISTE workshop on “Database Management Systems” from 21st to 31st May, 2013 at Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon (Remote Centre, NME-ICT IIT Bombay) with the coordination of Dr. Jitender, Remote Centre Coordinator; Mr. Vijender Hooda, Workshop coordinator and Ms. Chesta Agrawal, Akash Coordinator. The workshop was conducted under National Mission on Education through ICT ( NMEICT) sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India with the objective to enhance teaching skills of faculty members in core engineering subjects. The lectures and tutorials were transmitted live and were received at more than 250 coordinating remote centres across the country through synchronous distance mode using AVIEW technology along with the interaction of participants. The videos, presentations and contents of the workshop helped the faculty members learn and master various upcoming techniques.

 

The workshop was inaugurated on 21st May, 2013 by a great orator, mentor and an ideal teacher Padma Shri Honoured Prof. Deepak B. Phatak who is Subrao Nilekani Chair Professor at IIT, Bombay. Addressing the participants, he emphasised on the practical implementation of theoretical concepts of Engineering, Science and Technology that may help building India where dreams come true. He also shared the importance of critical analysis, succinct articulation, innovation, passion, attitude and discipline as key-terms of one’s success.

 

Another distinguished teacher Prof. S. Sudarshan, Institute Chair Professor and Head of Dept of CSE at IIT, Bombay introduced various concepts related to Database Mnagemnet Systems and involved the participants in PostgreSQL and pgAdmin3 on Akash2 Tablets provided by MHRD, Govt of India. During practical sessions, he imparted technical know-how on Linux System Administration, SQL Language, AVIEW technology, JDBC Connections and Authorisation, ER design, Servlets, Session Management and Cookies etc.

 

In his live interaction, Mr. Abhilash K. S., Assistant Professor, Kreist ASI Lab, IIT Bombay talked about setting up of Moodle Software and creation of Moodle account. Ms. Anita Sharma, an IAS officer also visited IIT, Bombay during the workshop and discussed different upcoming issues and concepts with the remote centres through AVIEW technology. Mr. Sajjan Dixit, Project Manager, IIT, Bombay visited Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon to observe and resolve hindrances, if any, during the conduct of workshop. He appreciated the level of participation and arrangement made for the workshop. A number of techniques like Data Indexing, Efficient Query Optimization, Map Reduce Methods, Recovery Control and Data Mining etc. were demonstrated and discussed during exhaustive lab sessions of the workshop.

 

Overall, the workshop was very much useful and beneficial to all faculty members as they learnt various practical approaches focussing on teaching of different concepts of Engineering. On 31st May, 2013 the certificates of participation were given away to all faculty members participated in the workshop.
