DGHE sponsored NATIONAL SEMINAR ON LITERATURE AND TRANSLATION

held on 28th-29th March 2014 at Hindu Girls College, Jagadhri

 

Dr. Suchitra Deswal, Associate Professor, Department of Applied Sciences & Humanities presented a paper in the two day DGHE sponsored NATIONAL SEMINAR ON LITERATURE AND TRANSLATION held on 28th-29th March 2014 at Hindu Girls College, Jagadhri. The title of her paper was “Problems of Translation from Hindi to English: An Analysis of Nirmal Verma’s The Last Wilderness (Antim Aranya)”.

 

The Seminar tried to explore the role, domain, theory and significance of translation in the World Literature. The thrust areas of the seminar were English Literature and its Foreign Relations, Erotic of Translation, Reception of Translated Classical Texts, History of Translation, Theory of Translation and Translation: Adaptation or Imitation.

 

The Seminar was divided into four parts—the Inaugural Session, the Technical Session, the parallel session and the Valedictory Session. Dr. Bhim Singh Dahiya, Former Vice-Chancellor, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra presidedover the seminar as Patron and guided the seminar proceedings. The Key note address was given by Prof. Maya Pandit, Dean, English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad.

 

The four Technical Sessions were chaired by dignitaries from different Universities across the country—Prof. Maya Pandit, Dean, English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad; Prof. Anand Prakash, Delhi University, Delhi; Prof. V.P. Sharma, formerly Professor & Head Dept. of English, formerly Dean of Studies HP University, Shimla; and Professor Sunita Siroha, Department of English, Kurukshetra University. The literary environs of the seminar were raised to a new high by the diverse hues of the knowledgeable talks of the resource persons on different aspects of translation literature and its problems. Twelve parallel sessions were conducted during the seminar, wherein, almost 70 delegates presented papers on wide-ranging facets of literature and translation.

 

The Valedictory Address was delivered by Prof. Abhai Maurya, former Vice-Chancellor, English and Foreign Language University, Hyderabad. The seminar showcased how literary translations bridge the emotional, cultural and specifically lingual gaps; and augments the understanding of human beings across cultural, national and lingual boundaries. The seminar was quite enriching and extensive in its themes and elaborated upon how the translator recreates and redefines the sense and sensibility of a foreign culture and language.
