GUEST LECTURE ON “TRAFFIC DATA COLLECTION TECHNOLOGIES AND CHALLENGES”

On 13th September 2013, the Civil Engineering Department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon organized a Guest Lecture on “Traffic Data Collection Technologies and Challenges” by Dr. Kalaga Ramachandra Rao, Professor-in-charge Transportation Engineering, Civil Engineering Department of IIT Delhi.

The objective of this lecture was to discuss varioustopics like transport policies, road traffic safety, vehicle safety, traffic calming, adverse health effects of traffic, biomechanics etc. Other topics covered during the lecture were data collection needs, technology classification, heterogeneous traffic, position based classification and accuracy.

The Guest- Speaker Dr. K. R. Rao emphasized on inductive-loop detectors which are widely used at intersections with traffic actuated signals, freeway entrance with automated ramp metering, use of traditional on-road/ contact-based devices/ sensors,Pneumatic road tubes, piezoelectric sensors etc. Further, he dealtwith manual counts, passive and active infra red, Ultra-sonic and passive acoustic devices. The participants also learnt the heterogeneous traffic and analysis of 3D trajectories, mobile sensors, and point sensors.
There was a discussion on the prime uses of various devices and their accuracies in which the Induction Loop Detectors resulted in least operation and maintenance costs.More than 150 students along with faculty members attended this lecture. They came to know the concepts of traffic counts, dada acquisition, routine counts, traffic flow etc.
