VISIT TO HIGH POWER TRANSMITTER, NEW DELHI

11th April 2016

Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon organized a one day educational visit to High Power Transmitter (HPT), New Delhi on 11th April 2016. 42 students from IV and VI semester along with two faculty members Mr. Shivhare and Mrs. Sakshi Pahuja from ECE department visited the HPT.

High Power Transmitter is responsible for up linking, downlinking and maintaining the links with other parts of INDIA. This project is called 10+1 digital MCPC earth station (C-band for DTH) and is intended for up-linking of multiple digital video channels (10 channels) in C-band to the INSAT 4B satellite.

Director General Mr. P.K Singh and Deputy Director General Mr. Ramesh Singh welcomed DCE team. Mr. Ramesh Singh shared few points about the TV tower, it was built in 1988 and is one of the biggest commercial/business districts of New Delhi.

The team was introduced with the various equipment’s installed at the C Band (10+1) earth station which is responsible for effective communication with satellites. The list of equipment’s shown during visit is as follows:

1. Automatic Antenna control unit

2. Beacon Receiver

3. 750 W C Band TWTA

4. Dehydrator

5. C Band Up convertor

6. System Equalizer

7. Digital QPSK modulator

8. Digital Multiplexer

9. Digital Encoder

10. RF spectrum analyzer

11. TV signal Generator

12. Signal routing switch

The station provides all the services to Doordarshan, which is one of the largest broadcasting organizations in the world in terms of studios and transmitters.

The station provides the DD free dish to Doordarshan which is a multichannel free to air Direct to Home service (DTH). It has the capacity of 80 SDTV channels along with 32 Radio channels. It is available in Ku band on GSAT-15 having MPEG-2 DVB-S, 5 streams of channels with downlink frequencies 11090,11170,11470,11510 and 11550 MHz. For Andaman and Nicobar islands a separate DTH service in C band is available. Doordarshan intends to transmit 10 digital channels using one transponder bandwidth. This is achieved by providing a digital uplink facility for 10-channel system with major equipment in sufficient redundancy configuration i.e. IRDs in (10+1) configuration encoders in (10+1) configuration, and multiplexer, modulator, up converter, equalizer and HPA in 1+1 configuration. The channels to be uplinked are derived using a C-band receive antenna along with LNBC and professional digital satellite receiver (IRD). The 10 channels up linking are derived from turnaround channels i.e. the channels that are already on air are received and retransmitted after multiplexing. In-house generated programs can also be fed to the system input. These channels are multiplexed and QPSK modulated at 70 MHz This modulated stream is up-converted to C-band and further amplified by HPA and transmitted by 7.6 meter C-band antenna.

The visit was a great opportunity for students from ECE Department as they closely watch and monitor all the activities required for transmission and reception.
