Two Day Programme on IT Consulting by CDC, New Delhi

A two day Training Programme on ‘IT Consulting’ was organized by Consultancy Development Centre, New Delhi from 11th-12th November, 2016 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. Mrs. Sanghamitra Arora (Associate Professor, ECE), Mr. Chain Singh (Assistant Professor, CSE), Ms. Sarita (Assistant Professor, CSE) & Ms. Nishi Gupta (Assistant Professor, CSE) from Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the program.

 

Consultancy Development Centre (CDC) is an Autonomous Institution of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India set up for promotion, development and strengthening of consultancy skills and capabilities in the country including enhancement of export of consultancy and professional services.

 

The program was organized to provide a platform for training on how consultancy works, what are the different stages, what tools and techniques can be used and also how to prepare consultancy proposals and reports. IT companies are continually developing new products to help streamline work and achieve better results. With a view to harness the power of IT, most organizations are tapping IT experts. IT consulting is a field that focuses on advising businesses on how best to use information technology to meet their business objectives. IT consultants provide expert advice and assistance in the fields of writing, modifying, testing and supporting software to meet the needs of a particular customer. Mr. B. G. Gupta (IT Consultant and visiting faculty at CDC, New Delhi) and Mr. Sunil Soni (Ex Global Head Commercial Vertical Delivery-Dell, IT Project / Program Management Consultant and visiting faculty at CDC, New Delhi) were the expert speakers for the various sessions.

 

Day 1: 11th November, 2016

On the first day, the Mr. B.G. Gupta delivered the introductory session during which he discussed several aspects related to the principles of IT consulting, the difference between IT Managers and IT Consultants and their overall scope of work, types of IT Consulting Firms, the life cycle of an IT consulting project and career options & opportunities in this field.

 

The next session was taken by Mr. Sunil Soni (Management and IT Consultant) who discussed about ‘IT Project Development Life Cycle’. He started his presentation by describing the importance of organizations in providing services, ROI and to gain profit. The organizations are run by managers, officers and executives, they have the decision making authority and the decisions are based on information. It is done by a comprehensive evaluation right from entity, attributes, the present values, facts, which are further recoded and the data is collected, the data is then arranged to obtain information. He also explained about Information Technology, and the difference between computer and IT; data storage and data processing while these two combined with data transfer relate to Information Technology. He elucidated about consulting saying that IT working in a partnership in which one partners is known as consultant and is attempting to provide a level of expertise. The responsibilities include system specification, understanding their work and the nature of their business. They should be able to comprehend with software, hardware and networking requirements. He further shared the roles of an IT manager which include system consulting, computer consulting, IT consulting and ICT consulting. He also explained the constant engagement lifecycle that comprises of evaluation, commitment, engagement, closure and maintenance. The IT consulting includes, IT project development life cycle, project planning, study, analysis and design phases.

 

The last session on the theme ‘Change Management with IT consulting’ was taken by Mr. B.G. Gupta where he discussed Business Process Reengineering, Bench Marking and Business Process Management. He shared how the life cycle of the business changes right from identifying the change required, analysis requirement the specific solution for same, then developing the solution, testing, rolling out and monitoring the solution.

 

Day 2: 12th November, 2016

The second day began with Mr. Sunil Soni’s presentation on ‘IT consulting Tools and Techniques’. In this session he covered the important topics such as ERP, E-business concept, CRM, SCM, Business Intelligence, DSS, OLAP, Data mining and Process Mining. He also explained about the guiding principles for Business Analysis and IT Consulting. He stated that the root causes are not symptoms, business improvement does not mean change in IT, creative options does not imply prescribed solution and the feasible requirements are complete life cycles and negotiation.

 

The next session was taken by Mr. B.G. Gupta on the theme ‘Preparing IT Consultants for Tomorrow’. In this session he explained the role of web technologies, SMAC (Social media, mobile, analytics and cloud), digital marketing and Internet of Things in today’s times. He continued his session by discussing about ‘Client Management and Consulting Process, Proposals and Reports’ to give an insight on business skills required for IT consulting with the focus on project sales cycle including writing proposals and reports.

 

Overall it was a great learning program with delineated information for all the participants. It provided a detailed insight about the new opportunities and skills that could help one to step into the field of IT Consulting.

 

The Program ended with the Certificate Distribution ceremony, Mr. B.G. Gupta thanked the participants for the valuable inputs.
