Summer School

on

Robotics and Advanced Embedded Systems

(15 June – 10 July 2015)

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon organized a 4-week training program on “Robotics & Advanced Embedded Systems” from 15th June to 10th July 2015. The objective of this training program was to provide a platform for project making and technology assistance in the field of robotics and embedded systems to the students. The students got an opportunity to learn from the dedicated and experienced Faculty of the institution. The training program “Summer School on Robotics & Advanced Embedded Systems” was designed to provide technologically advanced concepts to the students. An industrial exposure along with facts & figures of the robotics field were provided in account of several industrial expert visits. Students were briefed about basic concepts of robotics and embedded systems.

More than 60 students from EEE department, ECS department and ECE department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon actively attended the training program with full enthusiasm.

Companies such as SOFCON, CETPA InfoTech Pvt. Ltd, AHK Robotics, EFY and Digit sponsored the summer school. C-DAC, an autonomous body of Govt. of India, sponsored an online technical quiz organized during the Digital India Week.

During the technical sessions, faculty expert Mr. Chandra Shekhar Singh from EEE Department and Mr. Ashish Gambhir from ECE Department conducted the theoretical & hands-on sessions on Robotics and explained its applications to the students. Prof. (Dr.) K.K. Singh (Head of Department, EEE Department) also enhanced the significance of the session by introducing the programming of Arduino board with the help of Simulink in MATLAB. This implementation helped the students for easy programming without coding.

The training program was scheduled into three session’s namely theoretical session, practical session and project implementation. Week wise schedule of the summer school is explained below:

First Week

The students were introduced the basics of microcontroller, sensors and interfacing of sensor with microcontroller. Introduction to embedded C was also discussed in the lecture session. Faculty experts Mr. Chandra Shekhar Singh and Mr. Ashish Gambhir delivered the session and helped students to implement some basic minor projects on SPARKV kits such as LED blinking, buzzer, etc. A reputed organization SOFCON visited the college on 18th June 2015 during the summer school. Experts from the organization delivered a technical lecture on “PLC and Automation” and also on “Microcontroller interfacing with Arduino” to the enrolled students in summer school.

Second Week

Faculty experts Mr. Chandra Shekhar Singh from EEE Department and Mr. Ashish Gambhir from ECE Department started second week with introduction to Advanced Embedded C. Students were demonstrated with the programming of various ports of microcontroller and reading values from sensors. Along with port programming, actuators programming was also introduced to students. Various projects were implemented such as black and white line follower robot and calibration of IR sensor for optimum result according to the ambient environment.

Third Week

MATLAB Simulink implementation was discussed to the students. The basic things demonstrated were as follows:

1. Introduction to Arduino board (Arduino UNO R3)

2. Pin-out description of Arduino board

3. Installation & programming of Arduino software

Students implemented traffic light controller, motor field interfacing, IR sensor interfacing and servomotor control. During this week, Faculty Mr. Chandra Shekhar Singh and Ms. Charu Jain along with students from visited the Centre for e-Governance, Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) Electronics Niketan, New Delhi on 3rd July 2015 with the purpose of understanding the initiatives being taken by the Government of India under the Digital India Week (1st July-7th July 2015).

Fourth Week

Final week of summer school was completely devoted to practical session and main emphasis was on the project implementation on Arduino board. During the session, following projects were implemented:

1. Industrial Supervision Automation

2. Blind Navigation System

3. Automatic plant watering system

4. Stair case climber

5. Bluetooth controlled moving boat

6. Intelligent traffic control system

7. Automatic guided vehicle for warehouse

8. Automatic home automation system

9. Pick and place

10. Intelligent traffic light system

11. Railway track crack detection robot

12. Human detection robot

13. Digital lock system

14. Blind Control Stick

15. BT BOAT

AHK Robotics also visited the college and the industry experts delivered a lecture on Practical implementation of various robotic models used in the industries. They also introduced modules of KUKA Robotics and explained the practical implementation of Robotics & Automation in industries. KUKA offers a unique and wide range of industrial robots and robot systems, covering all common payload categories and robot types.

Students acquired enormous knowledge by the visits of these organizations.

On the last day of summer school i.e. 10th July 2015, project competition was organized wherein students showcased their talent in the projects. Following projects took positions in the competition:

First winning project – B T Boat

Second winning project - Automatic home automation system

Third winning project – Intelligent traffic light system

The Summer School provided a platform to the students where they can improve their technical knowledge regarding embedded system and develop new projects on their own. The students gathered immense knowledge and information from the events.
