Department of Computer Science & Engineering organized a "National conference on Advancement in Biometrics Trends and Its Applications (NCABTA - 2015)" on 16th October, 2015 at Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon. The Conference was sponsored by “Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB)” under Seminar Symposia Scheme of Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, New Delhi.

The field of biometrical feature identification and analysis is an area of fast growing interest where security demands, create challenges for research and development. The conference was focused on quantitative, applied biometrics, aiming to elicit information that guides policy, design, planning, and implementation of high performance biometric systems, particularly how systems are tested, certified, upgraded and improved.

The motive to organize the conference was to provide a platform for interaction among the knowledge holders belonging to industry, academia and various areas of society. The Chief Guest of Conference was Prof. (Dr.) Nasib Singh Gill, Director of Distance Education & Public Relations, M.D. University, Rohtak. The other delegates were Prof. (Dr.) S. K. Sharma, Director, USIC, JNU, Prof. (Dr.) S. K. Atreya, Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Col. (Dr.) Karanjit Singh, GM Cadila Pharmaceuticals, and Mr. Sanjay Vohra, Manager, Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development Center (IEDC), Acharya Narendra Dev College, DU.

In first session the Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) Nasib Gill discussed about the need of hardcore research in the areas of Image Processing, Biometrics and its Applications. Dr. Gill also explained about various applications, which require extensive use of image analysis techniques like: Cancer & Tumor detection based on image processing. He also encouraged the researchers by explaining about various ongoing research projects under his guidance.

Then, Prof. S. K. Sharma discussed about the interrelated areas with Biometric such as Modality-Related Research. Prof. Sharma said that every biometric system relies on one or more biometric modalities and it is necessary for understanding particular modalities and how best to use the modalities is critical to overall effectiveness. He said that research into several interrelated areas will surely bring continued improvement.

After that, Prof. S. K. Ateray discussed the importance of the biometric field and its various advantages. By focusing on the Adaptive biometric Systems, Prof. Atrey said that it aims to auto-update the templates or model to the intra - class variation of the operational data. He said that recently, adaptive biometrics have received a significant attention from the research community and this research direction is expected to gain momentum because of their key promulgated advantages.

Then, Col. (Dr.) Karanjit Singh, during his speech, explained the participants that India's national ID program called Aadhaar is the largest biometric database in the world. It is a biometrics - based digital identity assigned for a person's lifetime, verifiable online instantly in the public domain, at any time, from anywhere, in a paperless way. It is designed to enable government agencies to deliver a retail public service securely based on biometric data (fingerprint, iris scan and face photo), along with demographic data (name, age, gender, address, parent / spouse name, mobile phone number) of a person. The data is transmitted in encrypted form over the internet for authentication, aiming to free it from the limitations of physical presence of a person at a given place.

At the end of second session of the Conference, Mr. Sanjay Vohra, said that many different aspects of human physiology, chemistry or behavior can be used for biometric authentication and the selection of a particular biometric for use in a specific application involves a weighting of several factors. Mr. Vohra said that this is the vast area for research and innovation.

In the third session, several research papers covering wide areas such as Phishing Page Detection Tool, Weapon for Society, Biometric Detection Using Human Gears, Digital Image Processing, Human - Computer Interaction, Blue Eyes Technology, Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), Internet of Things- A new arena of sensing etc. were presented from the different colleges and universities such as IIT BHU, MAIT Delhi, Motilal Nehru College (D.U.), Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology, Amity School of Engineering and Technology Bijwasan (Gurgaon), Apee Jay Satya University Sohna, Manav Rachna University, MVN University, Bharti College DU, Dr. B. C. Roy College of Engineering & Technology Durgapur, West Bangal, NorthCap University Gurgaon, SRM University Sonipat & many more.

The conference concluded by presenting a memento presentation to the chief guest. Prof. Vishal Bharti, Head, Department of Computer Science & Engineering and Convener, NCABTA’15 expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the worthy chief guest , all the delegates and participants. The conference was enthusiastic and had a great experience for everyone and the participants gave valuable positive feedbacks.

The conference concluded with the aim to advance and expand the use of biometrics by targeting operationally relevant themes, giving emphasis to design, procurement. It also provided a forum for interaction of academicians, policy makers, faculty members for sharing of innovation and inventions in the various areas of Biometric System.
