Entering the Labyrinth of Inexact Computer Science: A Cyber Physical Approach

The IEEE Circuits & Systems/Control Society (CAS-CS), Delhi Chapter organized a lecture series on “Entering the Labyrinth of Inexact Computer Science: A Cyber Physical Approach” at IIT Delhi, Hauz Khaz on 16th October 2014. Students Dishant Passi (16056), Brijesh Aggarwal (16044), Kavita Fulara (16062), Mandisha Sharma (16085), Shubham Chabbhra (16150), Priyanka Mittal (15123), Karuna Hazrati (15121), Surbhi Bhardwaj (15103), Sanjana Singh (15096) of Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the event.

 

The IEEE CASS-CS Delhi Section Lectures Series was convened by Prof. Radu Marculsecu, Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Radu Marculescu is a Professor in the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, USA. He is a Fellow of IEEE and a distinguished lecturer. He has conducted worldwide seminars and has been involved in organizing several international symposia, conferences, workshops. He has been the guest editor of special issues in archival journals and magazines.

 

Dr. Radu Marculescu discussed about the actual behaviour of bacteria in computer domain and emphasised on eentering the labyrinth of inexact computer science i.e. a cyber-physical approach. He briefed the students about bacteria in terms of computer aspect and told about some facts on new CPS paradigm and impact of communication in system design. Further, his talk elaborated about the flagellate bacterium, chemo tactic behavior. He even conveyed how regulators reset so that they may have variable reading abilities.

 

After explaining the basic concepts, Dr. Marculescu enlightened the students with the WHO’s 2014 report that not only reveals that anti-biotic resistance is no longer a prediction for future but it is happening right now. He also informed how the bacteria communication enables social intelligence (Chemical Tweeting), how the cell behavior can be engineered, and how the key to fight drug resistant bacteria lies in understanding their social behavior. He also elaborated upon chemical tweeting and presented various methods to achieve it.

 

Dr. Marculescu even gave us a brief description on the system designs and what is it’s due impact on communication. In this description he widely dealt with Multicore Platforms and Quorum Sensing. He also dealt with the contradicting factors in Computation and Communication. He explained thoroughly about how current multicore platforms bring together computation, communication and control and how to process cores interconnected via routers and links. Dr. Radu also stated that how Quorum Sensing is coming out as a new frontier. He also discussed about his research works that focuses not only on modeling and optimization of embedded systems, but also cyber-physical systems, and biological systems.

 

The event was informative and the students learnt a lot about the cyber physical approach.
