Workshop on Information Security

1st April 2016

 

CSI Student Chapter, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon organized a workshop on “Information Security” on 1st April 2016. The key note speaker in the workshop was Prof. (Dr.) S.K Muttoo, CSE Department, University of Delhi. 43 students along with faculty members Ms. Sarita (Assistant Professor, CSE), Mrs. Saroj Pamulapati (Assistant Professor, IT) attended the workshop.

 

The objective of the workshop was to teach the basic principles of cyber security from the perspective of providing security awareness and its best practices for the real world.

 

Dr. S.K. Muttoo area of interest includes Coding Theory, Cryptography, Steganography and Digital Watermarking.

 

Cyber Security is becoming increasingly important in today’s networked world and is impacting every aspect of society including finance, healthcare, government, education, arts and entertainment. Information security is the collection of technologies, standards, policies and management practices that are applied to information to keep it secure. In today's high technology environment, organizations are becoming more and more dependent on their information systems. The public is increasingly concerned about the proper use of information, particularly personal data. The threats to information systems from criminals and terrorists are increasing.

 

Dr. Muttoo started with basic components of security which were Confidentiality, Integrity, Authenticity, and Availability. Then he discussed cryptography and its types. He conversed about encryption algorithms, their comparison and various security threats like Viruses, worms, Trojan horses. He said that cybercrime is a new dimension of criminal activities which spread all over the world in a fraction of a second regardless of political boundaries.

 

Dr. Muttoo also discussed aspects of Mobile security & current Research topics of information security like Information Leakage, Privacy, Data encryption, Secure shared computation, Image Steganography, information hiding and attacks. He also highlighted various ongoing projects in Information Security. Data Encryption Standard (DES), RSA (Rivest, Shamir, and Adleman), Hash Algorithms and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) were also explained.

 

In the end there was a query session in which students cleared their doubts related to the information security.

 

Overall workshop was very informative & brought awareness in the student and teaching fraternity, about the importance and means of information security.
