IEEE: 4th R. K. VIR MEMORIAL LECTURE ON GAS INSULATED SWITCHGEAR

IEEE Delhi Section, in collaboration with IET Delhi Local Network organized a Technical Lecture on Gas Insulated Switchgear at National Rail Museum, New Delhi on 4th January 2017. Two students Saurabh Kumar (17129)and Sanatan Jha (17127)from Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the technical lecture.

The lecture was organized in the memory of Late Shri R. K. Vir, Ex-GM / CLW at Railway Board, New Delhi. Mr. Vir was a recipient of R10 Outstanding Volunteer Award and was the author of a book "STORY OF CLW".

The chief guest of the lecture was Mr. Ashwini Kumar Kapoor, Member Traction, Railway Board & Ex-officio Secretary, Govt. of India.

The session was started with the welcome speech of Mr. R. N. Rajpoot, Chairman IET Delhi Local Network. The other panelist included Mr. V. K. Dutt, Additional Member, Railway Board, Mr. V. K. Agrawal, Chairperson IEEE Delhi Section, Mr. Devendra Gill, Chairman IET state, Mr. Atul Dogra, Chief secretory, DMRC, and Mr. N Venkateshwar, Ex-chairman of IET and Member of Railway Board.

After the welcome speech Mr. V. K. Dutt gave the brief history of Indian Railway and its modernization. Then, Mr. V. K. Agrawal gave his views on technology being used in Indian Railway and gave introduction of gas insulated switchgear.

Mr. Agrawal said that Gas - insulated high - voltage switchgear is compact metal encapsulated switchgear consisting of high - voltage components such as circuit-breakers and disconnectors, which can be safely operated in confined spaces. He also discussed that GIS is used where space is limited, for example, extensions, in city buildings, on roofs, on offshore platforms, industrial plants and hydro power plants. ABB has always been and continues to drive innovation in GIS technology in ratings, operations, switching technology, smart control and supervision, and compactness.

Explaining about the several advantages of GIS, Mr. Agrawal said that ABB’s GIS offers outstanding reliability, operational safety and environmental compatibility. It provides a complete range of products for all ratings and applications from 72.5 kV to 1200 kV matching current and future requirements for modern switchgears.

Then, the chief guest Mr. Ashwini Kumar Kapoor, expressed his views for enhancement of the gas insulated switchgear technology. After that, Mr. Atul Dogra discussed about the various application of Gas Insulated Switchgear such as Power transmission, Integration of renewable power generation units to the grid and Railways.

Then, there was an interactive questions and answers session in which attendees raised some questions and their doubts about GIS. In the end, Mr. V. K. Agrawal delivered the vote of thanks to the panelist and to the officers of railway board present during the lecture. It was a great experience for the participants as Mr. Ashwini Kumar Kapoor explained in detail about various features and application of Gas Insulated Switchgear.
