IEEE Technical Lecture on "Engineering Evolution in Electronics and Fifty Years of Moore"

5th April 2016

IEEE Delhi Section organized a technical lecture session on “Engineering Evolution in Electronics and Fifty Years of Moore” by Prof. M.K. Radha Krishan at Seminar Hall, Administrative Block, IGDTUW, New Delhi on 5th April 2016. Anurag Vats (16029), from Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the lecture.

The lecture was delivered by the Student Representative, IEEE from Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW). After the welcome address a brief introduction was given about the IEEE Delhi Chapter.

Prof. M.K. Radha Krishan, Vice President of Regions and Chapters, IEEE Electron Devices Society was the key note speaker. He discussed about the advantages of semiconductors and said that semiconductors made it possible for the technology to expand in the field of science and shrink in size. He also talked about several scientists who had worked on the semiconductors and Integrated Circuits.

Prof. Radha Krishan explained about MOSFET (Metal - Oxide Semiconductor Field - Effect Transistor), special type of field - effect transistor (FET), that works by electronically varying the width of a channel along which charge carriers (electrons or holes) flow. He also showed the first IC (Integrated Circuit) designed by Kilby in 1958 and explained how it work.

He then focussed on the present consumption of power by the world on a daily basis in comparison to that in the earlier times. Now the technology needs to improve in order to meet the required amount of energy and also to save and utilise it in a smarter way.

The session concluded with a question and answer session in which attendees’ doubts about issues related to semiconductors and the scope of electronics were cleared.

In the end, the vote of thanks was given by Prof. Nupur Prakash, the founder Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW). It was a great experience for the participants.
