12th IEEE INDICON 2015

Technical talk on “Integration of Demand Response with Renewable Energy for

Efficient Power System Operation”

IEEE Delhi Chapter in association with IIT Delhi, organised a Technical talk in 12th IEEE INDICON 2015 on “Integration of Demand Response with Renewable Energy for Efficient Power System Operation” by Prof. Saifur Rahman on 17th December 2015 at Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi. Two students Nishant Kumar (17096) and Lokesh Pandey (17074) from Department of Computer Science & Engineering attended the talk.

INDICON is annual conference conceptualized by IEEE India Council in the field of Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electronics and Communication Engineering in general. Dr. Saifur Rahman is professor of electrical and computer engineering and the founding director of the Advanced Research Institute at Virginia Tech. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and a distinguished scholar of the Power & Energy Society.

The talk focused on the opportunities and challenges of electricity generation from renewable and sustainable sources, and various issues through which Demand Response (DR) can facilitate their large-scale integration which include solar, wind, hydro and ocean energy. He focused on the issues of availability, reliability, sustainability and economic viability of these resources as well as the technical challenges of integrating them with the electrical power grid.

During the talk, Prof. Rahman followed two tracks, in which the first was to introduce the penetration and characteristics of renewable energy sources and the second focused on demand response, and the ways by which it could be implemented in various electric utilities and how they can interact with renewable sources. Finally, the smart grid topic was presented with some case study of their deployments in various parts of world.

In the end there was an interactive questions and answers session in which students raised some questions and their related doubts about the topic. It was a great experience for us as Prof. Rahman explained in detail about various concepts related to Demand resources and Renewable Energy.
