National Workshop “AUTOKRITI 7.0 2015”

A national workshop "AUTOKRITI 7.0 A Petrol v/s Diesel Car Overhaul Workshop" sponsored by Tata Motors was organised by the SAEINDIA NIT Kurukshetra Collegiate Club. Twenty students of Mechanical Engineering Department from Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the event along with faculty coordinator Mr Vikrant Yadav from 25th to 29th October, 2015.

The objective of the workshop was to impart automobile knowledge to the students. The workshop gave an opportunity to the participants to disassemble, study and assemble car components with their own hands. The seventh season Autokriti 7.0 provided a deep insight to advance transmission system “AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION” with the help of Tata Indica (diesel) v/s Tata Nano (Petrol) cars with. The workshop was carried out in both theoretical and practical sessions.

The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Himanshu Dinodia, Deputy Manager - Diesel Vehicle Testing and Calibration Maruti Suzuki India Limited and Dr. Dixit Garg, HOD , Mechanical Engineering Deaprtment. The other dignitaries were Prof. Jaideep Gupta, Faculty Advisor SAENITKKR Club, Mr. Ashish Sharma, Deputy Manager (Industrial Engineering) at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Mr. Kovid Sachdeva, Design Engineer at Mahindra & Mahindra.

On the first day industry experts and professionals from the automotive industry took theoretical sessions on automotive science. The main Topics discussed during the session covered-

1. Basic automotive concepts .

2. Advanced technologies used in automobiles.

Mr. Himanshu Dinodia, started the session with lecture on diesel engine and emission control. He explained through presentation the major technologies designed to control particulate matter (PM) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Dr. Dixit Garg discussed on the advancement and innovation of technology in this field and highlighted on Hybrid electric vehicles, Energy regeneration and on Automotive power supply & batteries. Mr. Ashish Sharma mainly focused on major new initiatives designed to facilitate investment, foster innovation, protect intellectual property, and build best-in-class infrastructure for the automobile industry. Mr. Kovid Sachdeva explained the latest on automotive design. He said that industrial designers, mechanical engineers and electrical engineers, collectively develop or improve motor vehicle structures, accessories, engines and related systems.

The SAENITKKR Club members gave presentations to the participants on Engine, Transmission, Suspension, Brakes, Steering and Electronics& at the same time interacted with the participants for thorough understanding of all concepts.

The first phase aimed to provide sound theoretical knowledge and establish the basic concepts to the participants.

In the next phase of the workshop the focus shifted to practical understanding of complete overhauling of the vehicle, by the participants themselves, under the guidance of Mentors at the Floor. The students got practical demonstration of a complete Overhaul of Automatic Transmission advancement over manual transmission through Tata Nano (Petrol engine) and Tata Indica (Diesel engine). In depth functioning and working of suspension, steering and braking systems of the vehicle were taught to the students. Students were explained about torque converter, Planetary gears train and Hydraulic controls. They also were introduced to the Effects of automatic transmission on vehicle control. Students came to know about turbo-chargers. “Direct Inject” and “common rail” engines have been the latest developments. Direct inject engines have taken care of the noise problems to a large extent. They also give better mileage over the older indirect injection models.

The students were also provided with interactive study materials and information booklets, to help them retain what they have learned during the workshop. All their doubts were cleared through practical demonstrations by the mentors.

The students got an opportunity to get a hands on experience on the topics and to interact with the students of NITs and IITs.

The whole workshop was very informative. Participants learnt a lot about automobiles.
