LECTURE ON CYBER SECURITY

25th August 2016

Computer Society of India (CSI), Delhi Chapter organized a technical lecture on “Cyber Security-A tool against hacking” on 25th August 2016 at Ambedkar Institute of Technology, New Delhi. Three Students, Saurabh Kumar (17129), Lokesh Pandey (17074), Nishant (17096) from Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the technical talk.

The objective of the program was to discuss about various Cyber Security issues.

The chief guest of the event was Prof. M.P. Goel Excutive Director, CSI, Delhi, and was presided over by Dr. Amita Dev, Director, Ambedkar Institute of Technology, New Delhi. During the inauguration ceremony, Prof. Goel discussed that Computer Society of India (CSI) is the first and largest body of computer professionals in India, in which the wide spectrum of members is committed to the advancement of theory and practice of Computer Engineering and Technology Systems, Science and Engineering, Information Processing and related Arts and Sciences. Prof. Goel said that Computer Society of India is a platform to meet and exchange views and information learn and share ideas.

After inauguration ceremony, Dr. Amita Dev addressed the students. Then, Mr. Shiv Kumar R.V.P. (Region-1) focused on several other benefits of CSI. The key speaker was Shri Varun Nair, Cyber Security Professional, Snapdeal. Mr. Nair discussed that Computer Security, also known as Cyber Security or IT Security, is the protection of information systems from theft or damage to the hardware, the software, or from disruption or misdirection of the services they provide. He discussed that it includes controlling physical access to the hardware, as well as protecting against harm that may come via network access, data and code injection, and due to malpractice by operators, whether intentional, accidental, or due to them being tricked into deviating from secure procedures.

Discussing about “Spoofing”, Mr. Nair told that it is a fraudulent or malicious practice in which communication is sent from an unknown source disguised as a source known to the receiver. Spoofing is most prevalent in communication mechanisms that lack a high level of security. Mr. Nair also discussed about “Denial of Service attack and Tampering”, which is a malicious modification of products, such as "Evil Maid" attacks the security services of the computer that has been shut down and left unattended.

Then, there was an interactive questions and answers session in which attendees raised some questions and their doubts about the issues related to certain security attacks. It was a great experience for students as Mr. Nair explained in detail about each and every concept of Cyber Security along with its key research areas. In the end, vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Vinay Kumar Secretary, CSI Delhi Chapter.
