Two Week ISTE Workshop on Fluid Mechanics:-A Report

Mr. Tanvir Singh, Assistant Professor as Workshop Coordinator from Mechanical Engineering department and Dr. Jitender Kumar Head of Deptt (IT) as Remote Centre Coordinator have organized “Two week ISTE workshop on Fluid Mechanics” under National Mission on Education through ICT (MHRD, Govt of India) conducted by Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, West Bengal at Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon from 20th May – 30th May 2014.

The main objective of this workshop was to provide in-depth knowledge about the Fluid Mechanics in order to train teachers on the methodology to be followed in the T10KT Project.

Day 1: 20 May 14 (Tuesday)

Inaugural Function

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Sundararajan. T, Head of Mechanical Department, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras as a guest of Honour. Prof. Partha Pratim Chakrabarti, Director of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur gave his kind consent to preside over the function. After the inauguration ceremony, speech on introductory concepts on fluid mechanics was given by Prof. Shankar Kumar Som, Prof. Suman Chakarborty and Prof. Sandipan Ghosh Moulic.

Day 2: 21 May 14 (Wednesday)

The second day of workshop started with lecture by Prof. Sandipan Ghosh Moulic on Fluid statics and Fluid elements under rigid body motion. In this, he tried to emphasise on the basic concepts behind the statics of fluid with different elements under different motion attained by bodies also the situations involving fluids under rest/rigid body motion. In the evening session, tutorials based on Fluid statics and Fluid elements under rigid body motion were carried out. Separate tutorial questions were distributed to all the participants to solve. The Day two was concluded with that, consider fluid is under zero shear and only normal component of stress manifested in terms of the negative of the thermodynamic pressure acts on the fluid.

Day 3: 22 May 14 (Thursday)

The third day of workshop started with lecture by Prof. Shankar Kumar Som and Prof. Suman Chakarborty on Kinematics of Fluid Flow Part-I, Part-II, and Part-III In that, they explain the basic understanding of the fluid kinematics which forms the groundwork for the studies on dynamical behaviour of fluids in consideration of the forces accompanying the motion. In the evening session tutorials based on Kinematics of Fluid Flow Part-I, Part-II and Part-III were carried out. Separate tutorial questions were distributed to all the participants to solve. Day third was concluded with kinematics of fluid describes the fluid motion and its consequences without consideration of the nature of forces causing the motion.

Day 4: 23 May 14 (Friday)

The fourth day of workshop started with lecture by Prof. Suman Chakarborty on Dynamics of Inviscid Flow Part-1. In that he tried to emphasise how the considered fluid motion disregarding the forcing parameters influencing the flow. After that Prof. Sandipan Ghosh Moulic explained the Dynamics of Inviscid Flow and its application to engineering devices. In the evening session tutorials based on Dynamics of Inviscid Flow Part-I were carried out. The session was concluded with the role of some of the forcing parameters that influence the motion as well as their relation with the motion of the fluid.

Day 5: 24 May 14 (Saturday)

The fifth day of workshop started with lecture by Prof. Shankar Kumar Som on Reynold’s transport theorem and its applications Part-II. In that he emphasise that in order to apply classical laws, some kind of mathematical transformation is required that can transform the rate of change of physical parameter with respect to a system in terms in terms of that with respect to a control volume. After that Prof. Suman Chakarborty explained the Dynamics of viscous flow and its application to Internal Flows Part-I and Part-II. In the evening session tutorials based on Reynold’s transport theorem and its applications were done and the session was concluded with the application of Reynold’s transport theorem to conservation of mass.

Day 6: 26 May 14 (Monday)

The sixth day of workshop started with lecture by Prof. Suman Chakarborty on Dynamics of viscous flow and its application to internal Flows Part-III. In that, he discussed the basic concepts behind the dynamics of viscous flow with a complete analytical solution for the equation of motion in case of laminar flow. After that Prof. Sandipan Ghosh Moulic tried to explain Dynamics of viscous flow and its application to external Flows Part-I and Part-II. In the evening session tutorials based on Dynamics of viscous flow and its application to external Flows were discussed.

Day 7: 27 May 14 (Tuesday)

The seventh day of workshop started with lecture by Prof. Sandipan Ghosh Moulic on Dynamics of viscous flow and its application to external Flows Part-III. In that, he discussed the flow of liquid with the free surface. After that Prof. Shankar Kumar Som explained the principle of similarity and dimensional analysis. In the evening session tutorials based on Dynamics of viscous flow were done and the session was concluded that the problem based on viscous flow to be solved with the available and empirical calculations.

Day 8: 28 May 14 (Wednesday)

The eighth day of workshop started with lecture by Prof. Shankar Kumar Som on Pipe Flows. In that, he discussed the flow of liquid with the free surface. After that Prof. Sandipan Ghosh Moulic explained the principle of similarity and dimensional analysis. In the evening session tutorials based on Dynamics of viscous flow were done and the session was concluded that the problem based on viscous flow to be solved with the available and empirical calculations.

Day 9: 29 May 14 (Thursday)

The ninth day of workshop meant for both Offline Test and Online Moodle Quiz which was mandatory for all the confirmed participants. The questions for offline test were displayed on the A/View. The hard copies of offline test questions were given to all the participants to solve and submit their solutions to the workshop coordinator on the same day. Online moodle quiz was conducted as per the schedule given by IIT Kharagpur. The day was concluded with successful completion of online moodle quiz and off-line test.

Day 10: 30 May 14 (Friday)

The last day of workshop started with lecture by Prof. Shankar Kumar Som on Introduction to Fluid Machines Part-II, Part-III. In that he explained the basic concepts and principles on which the fluid machine works. The second half of the day was for concluding session and Veledictory. In this, many remote centres were selected by IIT Kharagpur coordinators for valuable feedback.

The workshop was concluded with brief discussions on basic fundamental concepts of fluid mechanics and their future prospects in mechanical as well other streams of engineering. Workshop was concluded with Feedback from all the participants/workshop coordinators followed by Valedictory session by distributing the certificates to all the participants.
