ISTE WORKSHOP

A One Week Coordinators Workshop was organized by IIT Bombay on Database Management Systems from 6th May to 10th May, 2013. The main objective of this workshop was to provide a complete orientation to the Faculty members who will act as Workshop Coordinators during the main workshop which would be held from 21st May to 31st May 2013 under the project called "Empowerment of Students & Teachers through Synchronous & Asynchronous Instruction". This initiative is part of the National Mission on Education through ICT, supported by MHRD.

Mr. Vijender Singh Hooda, Associate Professor, Department of Information Technology represented Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon. The programme commenced with an introductory speech by Prof. Deepak. B. Pathak, Department of Computer Science, IIT Bombay. He emphasized on the relevance of Practical knowledge rather than theoretical knowledge.He advised the coordinators to make students Practical oriented rather than mere learner.

The Course Content discussed during this five day work shop by Prof. S. Sudarshan Department of Computer Science, IIT Bombay are as follows:

1. Overview of data management systems. Relational model and query languages (relational algebra and calculus, SQL).

2. Database design using the ER Model, ER Diagrams, UML Class Diagrams.

3. Relational database design and normalization. Integrity and Security.

4. Design and development of Web based information systems.

5. Overview of storage structures, indexing. query processing and optimization, and transaction processing.

6. A brief introduction to decision support and data analysis, data warehousing and data mining and Information Retrieval.

7. Querying Big Data using Hadoop.

Each lecture was followed with rigorous lab sessions with implementation all the concepts that are discussed and can have much better understanding of concept with its practical importance and exposure.Further he explained that students must be trained with current technologies, methods adopted in Industries and market for their better future.

The workshop concluded on 10th May 2013 with a valedictory ceremony. Prof. Deepak B. Phatak and Prof. S. Sudarshan congratulated everyone for the successful completion of the workshop and also distributed Certificate of Participation to all the participants.
