AN INDUSTRIAL VISIT AT MOTHER DAIRY PLANT

Computer Science and Engineering Department, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon organized an Industrial Visit at Mother Dairy Plant, New Delhi on 11th March, 2015. Sixty Seven students from IV and VI semester accompanied by Mr. Tanupriya Choudhury, Assistant Professor, CSE Department, attended the industrial visit.

Mother Dairy Plant was commissioned in 1974 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). It was an initiative under Operation Flood, the world's biggest dairy development program launched to make India a milk sufficient nation. Over the years, Mother Dairy Plant has contributed significantly in achieving this objective through a series of innovations and programs.

During the visit, Mr. Ashok Verma, Manager Mother Dairy Plant discussed about milk processing, controlled by the process automation in which state-of-art microprocessor technology is used to integrate and completely automate all functions of the processing areas to ensure high product quality, reliability and safety. Mr. Verma also discussed about four ways for the processing of the milk which includes clarification, in which the clarifier spins the milk at very high speed, removing all dust particles that are invisible to the naked eye. Second way is standardization in which milk from different breeds of cows and buffaloes varies in its composition. Hence, to make milk uniform in composition, it is standardized by raise or lowering its fat and SNF percentage to a desired level, The third way is homogenization, in which the milk is subjected to a very high pressure due to which the large fat globules present in milk are broken down into tiny droplets. And the last is pasteurization in which the milk is heated at 72oC for few seconds and then is rapidly cooled down to 4oC.

Mr. Verma also explained students regarding the procurement, process and marketing systems of the milk and milk products in details with the help of interactional discussions and by demonstrating specially prepared documentary film for this purpose. Suitability of various milk variants to the different segment of the society on the basis of their age and work life style was also informed.

From the visit, students got introduced with natural benefits of milk, manufacturing technologies used in Health Sector. It was really interactive and truly knowledgeable visit.
