TRONAXIOM - 2016

7th - 8th April 2016

ISTE Student Chapter of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon an event TRONAXIOM 2016 on 7th - 8th April 2016. During this event, a two - day workshop was conducted based on the theme “Introduction to the Internet of Things” wherein the experts from Cybertron Network Solutions, Gurgaon imparted training to the participants.

The objective of the workshop was to introduce the students about the latest technology through practical demonstration and after the completion of the workshop there was a competition to test their learning. The idea behind the event was to bring out the innovation in the mind of the students and provide them the opportunity to explore the real life applications of Engineering. Top 3 teams will be awarded as winners of the workshop.

Day 1

The event was inaugurated by Principal Prof. (Dr.) Karanjit Singh, DCE, Gurgaon in the presence of Dr. Neelam Ruhil (DCE ISTE Student Chapter Head), Experts from Cybertron and HOD’ s of various Department.

Inaugurating the workshop Prof. (Dr.) Karanjit Singh expressed his views that Internet of Things (IoT) is a popular buzzword right now which enables devices to communicate with other IoT devices and larger cloud - based servers. IoT devices can often be thought of as small parts of a much larger collective system which includes large servers based in the cloud. He also highlighted the importance of Internet of Things in various applications.

The experts for the workshop were Mr. Amir Khan and Mr. Venkateshwar from Cybertron Network Solutions. During the first session, Mr. Amir Khan briefed the students about the course including the explosive growth of the “Internet of Things” that is changing the world and the rapid drop in price for typical IoT components is allowing people to innovate new designs and products at home. He explained the importance of IoT in society, the current components of typical IoT devices and trends for the future. IoT design considerations, constraints and interfacing between the physical world and IoT device will also be covered. The expert described the design trade - offs between hardware and software and the introduction also covered key components of networking to ensure that students understand how to connect their device to the internet. Mr. Amir explained the various trends that enabled the Internet of Things, and how it changes, the way design is performed. During the session, some of the ramifications that IoT is having on society today were discussed.

The second session of the day commenced with a lab session in which Mr. Venkateshwar demonstrated the concept of the Internet of Things with its implications. In the module, the details involved in the design and implementation of IoT devices were explored. Unlike traditional computer-based systems, IoT devices are “embedded” within other devices in order to provide enhanced functionality without exposing the user to the complexities of a computer. The users interact with the device in a natural way, similar to their interactions with any other objects in the world. In this way, an embedded system has an interface that conforms to the expectations and needs of the users. Establishing a natural interface requires that the embedded system interface with the physical world directly through sensors, which read the state of the world, and actuators, which change the state of the world. In this module, the structure of embedded systems and their interactions with the physical world were discussed.

In the end of the first day, the students were made to familiarize with the concepts of IOT, embedded systems and the sensors and actuators.

Day 2

The second day of TRONAXIOM - 2016 started with the session on “Implementation using Hardware and Software”.

Mr. Amir elaborated the students that IoT devices are implemented using both hardware and software components. Dedicated hardware components are with the physical world, and to perform tasks which are more computationally complex. Microcontrollers used to implement the interface are used to execute software that interprets inputs and controls the system. This module discussed the roles of both the hardware and software components in the system. The functions of common hardware components are described and the interface between the software and hardware through the microcontroller is explained. IoT devices often use an operating system to support the interaction between the software and the microcontroller. The role of an operating system in an IoT device and how an IoT operating system differs from a standard one were defined.

Another technical expert Mr. Venkateshwar explained an important aspect of the Internet of Things (IoT) that devices are networked in some way, and often connected to the Internet. Networking enables devices to communicate with other IoT devices and larger cloud - based servers.

This module introduced the basics of networking and the Internet protocol in particular. Eventually, most IoT devices are connected to the Internet, so understanding the protocols associated with the Internet is important to the design of IoT devices. Introducing the concept of a Mobile Ad Hoc Network, or MANET, this described small local networks of IoT devices.

In the end of second session, there was a project competition based on the learning from the workshop was organized. The students were given a task which they have to complete within a specific period of time.

53 students in fifteen teams participated in the competition. The first position was bagged by two teams Team Number 1: Govind (16212), Devesh Kasturia (16205), Mohit Yadav (16852) and Team Number 2: Kartik Singh (16225) and Akshat Sharma (16294) and Himanshu Shah (16220). Team Number 7: Aayushi Nayak (17762), Dona Paul (17766), Shivani Rao (17776) and Deepika Dang (17199) was on the second position and Team Number 6: Puneet Kumar (17436), Hari Om (17374), Deepak Yadav (17363), Pawan (17429) and Shubham Rauthan (17777) was on third position. All the three teams will compete at the final round of Tronaxiom 2016 to be held in Delhi in the month of September 2016.

In the presence of ISTE Coordinators and other dignitaries, Hon’ble Principal gave away the certificates to all candidates and trophies to the winners of the IOT workshop.
