IEEE Talk on Quality and Reliability of Contact Lines

11th Jan 2017

The Institution of Engineering and Technology Delhi Local Network IET - DLN, in association with IEEE Delhi Chapter, organized a talk on Quality and Reliability of Contact Lines at India International Center, New Delhi on 11th January 2017. Two students Saurabh Kumar (17129)and Sanatan Jha(17127)from Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the talk.

The resource person and the chief guest, of the talk was Dr. Axel Schmieder, from SIEMENS AG, Germany. The welcome address was given by Mr. R. N. Rajpoot, Chairman IET Delhi Local Network. The other panelist included Mr. V. K. Dutt, Additional Member of Railway Board), Mr. R. N. Rajpoot, Chairman IET Delhi Local Network, Mr. Devendra Gill, Chairman IET State, Mr. N Venkateshwar, Ex-chairman of IET and member of Railway board, Mr. Dayal Dogra, Chief secretory of Northern Railway.

After the introductory speech, Mr. V. K. Dutt , Additional Member of Railway Board,  gave the brief history of technology used by Indian Railway. Mr. N Venkateshwar, Ex-Chairman of IET and member of Railway Board gave a description about the various ways in the contact lines are being used in Indian railway efficiently.

Dr.-Eng. Axel Schmieder discussed that the Electric traction is the most favorable type of power supply for electric railways from both ecological and economic perspectives. Its reliability largely depends on contact lines, which must operate in all climatic conditions with as little maintenance as possible. Extreme demands arise when overhead contact lines are required to provide reliable and safe power transmission to electric traction vehicles travelling at speeds in excess of 300 km/h.

Dr. Schmieder also discussed the future scope of contact lines. He discussed about the efficient use of contact line in other countries. He said that contact Lines for Railways Needs - oriented solutions that also work together with a variety of universally applicable standard components: This decisive advantage of the Sicat family in conjunction with secure, corrosion - resistant and low-maintenance components ensures maximum efficiency for your contact lines for both mass transit and main - line traffic.

The speaker discussed that contact Lines is a most important aspect for Indian Railways and provide connectivity. He also mentioned the importance of Contact Lines and Indian Railway in the Development of Our Country.

After conclusion and the presentation of all the panelists, the delegates interacted with the panelist and raised their questions. The talk proved to be very informative for students.
