What’s bugging you ? - Programming Contest

Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore organised programming contest “What’s bugging you?” on CodeChef on 24th January 2016. Deepak Kumar (16523) from Information Technology department representing Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon as Team Handle (Name) : thecoder0101 bagged the Third Position in the contest.

 

In the competition around 314 teams from various countries such as UK, Colombia, and Bangladesh etc. have participated. Among the participants from India, various prestigious colleges like IITs, IIITs, and Delhi University etc. participated. Only 223 were able to submit the solutions amongst 314 teams.

 

CodeChef is a global programming community which host contests, trainings and events for programmers around the world. They provide a platform for programmers everywhere to meet and compete. CodeChef provides platform to aspiring programmers. They host events both online and offline. It is a global competitive programming platform which supports over 35 programming languages and has a large community of programmers that helps students and professionals test and improve their coding skills. It provides a platform for practice, competition and improvement for both students and professional software developers.

 

Code Chef provides Practice Section to hone the participant’s 'Computer Programming Skills'. It offers to practice problems and submit solution in a language of choice. The programming contest judge accepts solutions in over 35+ programming languages. Each program was tested based on critical test data. However output and input should be exactly as specified in the samples provided. All the problems have same points allotted to them. Users are ranked according to the most problems solved.

 

The total time is the sum of the time consumed for each problem solved. The time consumed for a solved problem is the time elapsed from the beginning of the contest to the submission of the first accepted run plus 20 penalty minutes for every previously rejected run for that problem(Wrong answer, Time limit exceeded, Runtime Error, Compilation Error). There is no time consumed for a problem that is not solved.

 

To foster programming talent, CodeChef has introduced programs such as Go for Gold, CodeChef for Schools, as well as regular monthly contests.

 

1. Go for Gold initiative : Go for Gold is a non - profit program to enable Indian teams to excel at the world finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest, an annual multi - tiered competitive programming competition. The Go for Gold cup will be awarded to the Indian team that finishes at a higher rank than any other Indian team has reached in the history of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals.

2. CodeChef for Schools program : CodeChef for Schools aims to stimulate programmers at the grass root level to create a self - sustaining community of technology developers. The initiative hopes to enable Indian students to excel at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), one of the five academic Olympiads for high - school students worldwide. The CodeChef for Schools program has started by tapping school children from class 8 onwards and has pledged a yearly support of US $20,000 for this initiative.

3. Monthly contests : CodeChef hosts a 10 day long contest and two short contests every month - one designed to resemble the International Olympiad in Informatics and the other based on the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. These competitions provide a contest hosting platform to educational institutions for free. This “What’s bugging you?” competition is one of the monthly contest hosted by Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore.

 

The programming contest was overall very knowledge oriented but simultaneously fun filled.
