The Annual Workshop for Faculty of Engineering Colleges and NITTTR Faculty was conducted on 1st February, 2016 at National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, Chandigarh, is one of the four national institutes established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, for the growth and development of technical education in the country. Prof. Vishal Bharti, Head of Department, Computer Science & Engineering and Prof. Yashvardhan Soni, Associate Professor, Information Technology Deptt., represented Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon in the workshop.

The objective of the workshop was to make faculty development more effective and demand-driven. Various eminent attendees of the workshop from NITTTR, Chandigarh were Prof.(Dr.) B S Pabla, Professor & Head, ME Department, Prof. (Dr.) Upendra Nath Roy, HOD, Rural Department, Dr. Maitree Dutta, Head of Department, ECE, Prof. (Dr.) Rama Krishna Challa, HOD, CSE, Mr. Amit Doegar, Professor, CSE. Representatives from six colleges attended this workshop including DCE, Gurgaon, DGI Greater Noida, Northcap University, Chitkara University, IGBTU New Delhi and Punjab university Chandigarh.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. B.S. Pabla, Head of Department, Mechanical Engineering & Incharge IMCO and was organized to identify the training needs of faculty of Engineering Colleges for the year 2016-17. A suggestive list of short term training programs to be conducted during the year was shared for suggestions. The programs to be conducted for Applied Sciences were suggested to include more courses that are the need of the current market like fiber optics, wavelength division multiplexing and dense wavelength division multiplexing, optisim, optisystem and optigrating software. The programs need to focus from skill level to research and development level. The other important area on which the inventions today are based is nanotechnology and focus on programs addressing the issues of current research and developments areas.

In area of computer science a request to conduct an ICT based workshop of IBM Bluemix was also made. It was also discussed to take free software foundation of India (FSFI) to a new level which advocates and promotes the use and development of free software in India. For Electronics & Communication, the programs need to make a shift from theoretical overviews of the topics to practical based implementations. The workshop focused on emulators and simulators and other interesting areas that are needed to know are vector analyzer and antenna testing facility fields. The ECE Department also plans to set up a special cell (Electronics Service Centre) at NITTTR to organize session to make faculty equipped with platforms like MATLAB, SCILab and cadence tools. The department specific programs should focus more on practical workshop and should be outcome based.

The common point from various participating colleges came that the STC should be arranged in the months of May, June and Dec so that the regular routine of the classes in the colleges are not disturbed. NITTTR also organized visit to its department of Electronics Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering and Rural development where they showcased how the labs have been set up and the projects under those departments which have brought laurels to them.

The overall agenda of the workshop for faculty development, curriculum development and setting up of labs was very apt and need of the hour. The workshop also provided an insight to the prevailing technologies of the current market.
