IEEE LECTURE AT JAMIA MILLIA ISLAMIA, NEW DELHI

Two faculty Ms. Parul Bansal and Mrs. Poonam Yadav along with PG student Ms. Poonam from Electronics and Computer Engineering Department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the IEEE Lecture on “Issues associated with implementation of Embedded Generation and Microgrids” at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi on 30th January 2015. The lecture was organized by IEEE-JMI Delhi Chapter.

The objective of this lecture was to discuss the functional as well as theoretical aspects of embedded generation, wind power, principles of AC and DC etc.

The speaker for the event was Prof. Akhtar Kalam, School of Engineering & Sciences, Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia. During his lecture Issues associated with implementation of Embedded Generation and Microgrids, he explained embedded generation and discussed about the trend towards re-engineering of the European Power System by highlighting the technical challenges considering the basic technical principles such as respective part of AC and DC, feasibility of DC multi-terminal links, evolution towards DC networks, flexibility, reliability, control, etc. He further shared that the technical challenges also involve the consequences on the on-shore grid development and operation such as concentrated large intermittent in feeds.

The speaker also highlighted the challenges about the new electricity generation context of increasing the penetration of renewable energy resources, mainly wind and solar, as well as hydro power and biomass. The issues associated with this include managing the wind and solar energy so that these resources can be incorporated into the base load generation. He pointed out a solution of sharing energy from renewable sources and from the grid in a form recoverable as electrical energy when required. Various constraints such as equipment availability and life cycle of technologies and capital and operating costs (losses, maintenance, etc.) also need to be taken into account.

The lecture was attended by many scholars from different organizations. The participants learnt the concepts of embedded generation, the importance and implementation of renewable energy sources, development of transmission and distribution systems in the European power system. The lecture was extensively useful in understanding and recognizing various aspects of micro grids and grid development and operation.
