IEEE HARDWARE DESIGN WORKSHOP USING TI PLATFORM

3rd -4th September 2016

IEEE Delhi Section, in collaboration with Texas Instruments India University Program, IEEE R10 Industry Relations Committee and BVPIEEE, organized two day “Hardware Design Workshop using TI platform” on the 3rd - 4th September 2016 at Bharati Vidyapeeth’s College of Engineering. Five Students Aditya Goswami (16007), Ankit Kumar (16018), Shweta Popli (16154), Sneha Gupta (16157), Saket Kumar (17121) and Salomi S. Thomas (17125) from Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon gained hands-on experience in the workshop.

The mentor and speaker of the workshop, Mr. Dinesh from Texas Instruments (TI) took a session to bless the tech geeks with the one of the best experiences of working on TI’s multi-signal micro-controller, MSP430 and a wireless MCU, CC3200. As complicated as that may sound, the easier the instructors made it for the students.

The first day was dedicated to the basics of MSP430, including its architecture, special features and programming it using Energia. During the workshop, the participants were provided with their launch pads to solve certain set of problems. The speaker discussed CC3200 with on-chip Wi-Fi and Internet Protocols.

Mr. Dinesh introduced MSP430 launchpad and its various uses. He also explained various TI softwares and how to use them to program these launchpads, which is Energia 17.0v. Students learnt various operations that could be performed with the LEDs which again could be replaced by various other electrical peripherals, along with certain peripherals which can be controlled by MSP.

Mr. Dinesh also discussed the other new Launchpad, which was a wireless MCU, CC3200. He said that it can be connected with other peripherals with relays and then CC3200 is wirelessly connected to a WiFi connection nearby in the house.

The next application, which could be developed, is that when no one is present at the site or office, still one can access to e-machines using smartphone or laptop. It was practically shown in the workshop by the speaker using classroom’s lights as the target and connecting the launchpad to the WiFi of a mobile.

Company Official also gave various ideas how to increase the efficiency by connecting multiple things to MSP430 and later connecting MSP430 to CC3200. Thus, multiple things could be controlled together using single WiFi launchpad.

The workshop culminated with a closing ceremony. The attendees were motivated and oriented towards their goals to become a successful engineer. Also, special kits were provided, which included a MSP430 Launchpad and a Wi-Fi CC3200 launchpad to practice further.
