GUEST LECTURE ON ‘CONTROL OF HIGH DYNAMIC MEDIUM VOLTAGE AC DRIVES’

Prof (Mrs.) A. N. Mahajan  and  6 students from ECE and EEE departments of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon   attended  the  lecture  on Control of High Dynamic Medium Voltage AC Drives held on 15 April 2014 at NSIT Delhi.  The objective to attend this guest lecture was to get an exposure for various methods and causes of high switching losses  of  medium  voltage semiconductor devices.

The speaker Joachim Holtz, Life Fellow, IEEE,  University of Wuppertal – Germany   deciphered that the high switching losses of medium voltage semiconductor devices make the operation of the inverter at low switching frequency mandatory.  With multilevel voltage waveforms, the harmonic distortion of the motor currents is normally  high. To compromise between switching losses and harmonic distortion, switching frequencies around 1 kHz are customary. And Also explained  an Offbeat method that uses synchronized pulse patterns with minimum harmonic content.

The lecture was very useful for  the attendees  as it made  them  aware of new methods for dynamic performance of controller having complex variables, related to control voltages AC Drives.
