Industrial Visit to Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited, Learning Center

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon conducted an industrial visit to Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited, Learning Center, New Delhi on 7th October 2015. Nineteen students from EEE, ECS and ECE Department visited the plant with faculty member Mrs. Tanushree Bhattacharjee.

 

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited [TPDDL] is a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of NCT of Delhi with the majority stake being held by Tata Power (51%). Total generation limit is 108MW which is having three turbine sections in the plant, two gas turbine and one steam turbine generating 33.3MW each. Then the system is connected to three power transformers which are used to step down the voltage level for distribution purpose. TPDDL supplies 4Lakh customers in Delhi location. TPDDL distributes electricity in North & North West parts of Delhi. The company started operations on July 1, 2002 post the unbundling of the erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB). With a registered consumer base of 1.44 million and a peak load of around 1704 MW, the company's operations span across an area of 510 sq kms.

 

The team was welcomed by Ms. Shweta Joshi and Ms. Heena, of TPDDL. The student’s were guided by Mr. Prabhat Chandran, head engineer towards the plant where they were provided with safety helmets and instructions. The students were introduced to all the sections of the plant including turbine section, detractor, generator section, power transformers, sub-station and cooling towers.

 

The students came to know that TPDDL has to its credit several firsts in Delhi:

1. SCADA controlled Grid Stations,

2. Automatic Meter Reading,

3. GSM based Street Lighting system,

4. SMS based Fault Management System,

 

TPDDL has also embarked on its Smart Grid Journey and has become the first utility to initiate Automated Metering Infrastructure based Auto Demand Response program in the country which will help in managing peak demand & Grid stress.
