Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, Gurgaon organised an Inter - College Debate Competition at M.P. Hall Auditorium, Power Grid Township on 29th October 2015. The objective of this competition was to motivate the youth to stand up against the practices of corruption. The topic of debate “With Individual weakness on the rise, corruption is impossible to contain” was a medium of observing Vigilance Awareness Week from 26th October to 31st October 2015.

The guest-speakers of the occasion Mr. Parvez Hayat, IPS, Chief Vigilance Officer, POWERGRID and Mr. Sudip Kar, General Manager in Vigilance Department shared their views on the observance of this week. He further shared that such programs would inspire the system to implement preventive measures effectively, so that transparency and accountability can be maintained in the governance. The Jury members for the competition were Prof. R. K. Verma, Dr. Navneet Sharma and Ms. Meenakshi Davar, Executive Director, Power grid

The competition aimed to inform people about the negative impact of corruption on society and importance of reporting the corruption cases to relevant institutions and bodies. Corruption is found to be one of the most damaging consequences of poor governance system. It is characterized by lack of both transparency and accountability. Corruption lowers investment and hinders economic growth also human development. It also limits access to basic social services as well as increases the cost of their delivery. It is one of the factors responsible for poverty. Thus, corruption is anti-poor, antidevelopment, anti-growth, anti-investment and inequitable. The cost of corruption to a nation is very high.

The contestants also came up with various remedies to prevent corruption like lodging a complaint under Government of India, resolution of “THE PUBLIC INTEREST DISCLOSURE AND PROTECTION OF INFORMER (PIDPI)” (The Whistle Blowers Resolution)”. The Right to Information Act (RTI) gives one all the required information about the Government. Another potent check on corruption is Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).

The event concluded by distribution of certificates and prizes to the winners. It gives exposure to the students.
