IEEE: A Talk by Prof. Vijay K. Bhargava

“Evolving Fifth Generation Cellular Networks”

 

The IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), Delhi Chapter organized “A Talk by Prof. Vijay K. Bhargava” at IIT Delhi, Hauz Khas, New Delhi on 16th February 2015. Three students Himanshi Lamba (15036), Kumar Gaurav(15051) and Lakshay Gupta (15052) from Computer Science Engineering Department, Dronacharya College of Engineering attended the talk.

The Speaker, Dr. Vijay Bhargava, Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Mr. Bhargava delivered the lecture on “Evolving Fifth Generation Cellular Networks: An Energy-Efficient Perspective”.

Mr. Bhargava presented the existing scenario on energy consumption in base stations and introduced energy-efficient research approaches for different types of system and network architectures of 5G. He presented energy-efficient designs for multi- tier heterogeneous networks including cell association, resource allocation and wireless backhaul bandwidth allocation. Mr. Bhargava also discussed about secure transmission schemes of massive MIMO systems and presented an overview of device-to-device communication systems. The speaker explained energy harvesting technology as a key enabling technique for energy-efficient networks. He discussed its capability to reduce energy consumption in base stations, and its potential to alleviate limited battery life constraint in low power wireless devices.

Mr. Bhargava talked about the security design of massive MIMO systems. Massive MIMO is an emerging BS Technology for multiuser MIMO. It uses a large number of antennas at the BS. It is inexpensive, has low complexity, low power RF components.

The speaker of the event talked about device- to - device communication (D2D). Devices can only communicate through base stations. D2D is a key feature to 5G. D2D can enhance the performance of the system.D2D reduces latency, power consumption. It increases peak data rate. D2D can be used for traffic overloading.

He concluded the session by throwing light upon energy harvesting and wireless power transfer and talked about energy harvesting from environmental sources such as solar energy, wind energy etc. It reduces consumption of high cost energy sources in base stations and optimal utilization of limited available energy can be achieved.

It was a wonderful experience for the students as there were a lot of new things to learn from Prof. Vijay K Bhargava. The session was much interactive as there was a special question hour at the end of session.
