A Three day Workshop on

“Sample Surveys and Data Analysis (Using Software - SPSS, MINITAB and R)”

13th to 15th June 2016

Two faculty members Dr. Jyoti Anand and Mr. Ashok Kumar from Applied Sciences & Humanities Department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended a three - day National Workshop on “Sample Surveys and Data Analysis (Using Software-SPSS, MINITAB and R)” from 13th to 15th June 2016 at M.D.U Rohtak. The workshop was organized by Department of Statistics, M.D. University, Rohtak in conjunction with Indian Association for Reliability and Statistics The theme of the National workshop is focused to guide the researchers to apply appropriate tools for analyzing the huge static data using the statistical software like: SPSS, MINITAB and R.

Inaugurating the workshop, Dr. Dinesh Kumar, Vice Chancellor of YMCA University of Science and Technology, Faridabad, motivated the participants by discussing the number and types of statistical software packages that are available continue to grow each year. Most researchers gather data and then are at a loss for a sensible method of analysis and conclusions made are less likely to be valid.

During the workshop the eminent speakers like Prof. Athar Ali Khan from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh; Prof. Kalpana K Mahajan, Professor and Former Head in Punjab University, Chandigarh; Prof. Aquil Ahmed from University of Jammu, Jammu; Dr. Mukender Kadyan, Assistant Professor, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra; Professor Suresh K. Sharma, Punjab University, Chandigarh talked about different approaches and applications of the statistical software like: SPSS, MINITAB and R. The workshop endeavored to guide the researchers to appropriate analysis of data using statistical software.

Prof. Athar Ali Khan from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh shared his views on Data Analysis and Graphics by R software. He added in a comparison of all basic features for a statistical software R heads up with the best of Statistical software. Dr. Kalpana K Mahajan, Professor and Former Head in Punjab University, Chandigarh explained all the key aspects of Inferencing with SPSS. She focused on Statistical Hypothesis, Level of Significance, Parametric and Non parametric Tests, their advantages and disadvantages. Prof. Aquil Ahmed from University of Jammu, Jammu talked about Minitab. He told Minitab is an eLearning package that teaches statistical tools and concepts in the context of quality improvement.

Another expert Dr. Mukender Kadyan, Assistant Professor in Kurukshetra University expressed his views on SPSS package widely used for conducting statistical analysis, manipulating data and generating tables and graphs that summarize data. He discussed that SPSS can provide a single, standardized quality control and improvement solution that can be easily validated that cover the whole range of manufacturing statistics, including simple descriptive statistics and graphics, QC charting, capability analyses for normal and Non-normal distributions, design of experiment (DOE) much more.

On the last day, Prof. Suresh K. Sharma, Punjab University, Chandigarh enlightened the participants on Correlation and Regression, Multiple Regression, Partial Regression and Adjusted R2. He further discussed Sampling and the types of Sampling.

The valedictory speech was delivered by Prof. Bijender Kumar Punia, Hon’ble Vice - Chancellor, M.D. University, Rohtak.

The workshop proved to be very fruitful as the participants learnt a lot about statistical software.
