Report on Industrial Visit to Centre for e-Governance, New Delhi

 

On 16th September 2014, a group of twenty eight students from Information Technology Department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon visited Centre For e-Governance, Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) Electronics Niketan, CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.

The purpose of this Industrial visit was to introduce students with various e-Governance projects initiatives taken up by Government of India in collaboration with CDAC, National Informatics Center, Media Lab Asia etc.

Mr. Devender Yadav, Project Manager, Center for e-Governance discussed about National e-Governance Plan (NeGP). The National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) has been formulated by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY) and Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG). The Union Government approved the NeGP, comprising 27 Mission Mode Projects (MMPs). The NeGP aims at improving delivery of Government services to citizens and businesses with the vision: "Make all Government services accessible to the common man in his locality, through common service delivery outlets and ensure efficiency, transparency & reliability of such services at affordable costs to realize the basic needs of the common man."

Mr. Dev Dutta, Scientist, Center for e-Governance discussed about various mission mode projects (MMPs), which are implemented by Central Government, State government and both. The various projects implemented by central Government are Banking, Central Excise & Customs, Income Tax (IT), Insurance, Passport, Pension, etc. Various State level projects are Agriculture, Commercial Taxes, e-District, Land Records (NLRMP), Municipalities, e-Panchayats, Road Transport, PDS, Education and Health. Various projects implemented in collaboration with Central Government and State Government are CSC, e-Biz, e-Courts, e-Procurement and India Portal etc.

Mr. Nizam Haidar, Project Engineer CDAC discussed about BOSS (Bharat Operating System Solutions). GNU/Linux is an initiative taken up by Department of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India for enhancing the use of free/Open Source Software through India developed C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) Chennai. BOSS GNU/Linux is a key deliverable of National Resource Center for Free and Open Source Software (NRCFOSS) promoted by Department of Information Technology (MC & IT), Government of India. Currently BOSS GNU/Linux Desktop is available in all the Official Indian Languages such as Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Bodo, Urdu, Kashmiri, Maithili, Konkani, Manipuri which will be useful for the non-English literate users in the country. EduBOSS is an educational variant of BOSS. Linux operating system, has educational applications that are useful for schools (primary and higher levels).

Mr. Devender Yadav also conducted an online quiz at the end of the demonstration of the understanding of e-governance projects. Mr.Sandeep Singh received First Prize, Ms. Shailja Yadav received Second Prize and Ms. Nisha received Third Prize in quiz competition.
