IEEE Event: Prof. Saifur Rahman Talk on Innovation

Mr. Amar Saraswat, Assistant Professor, along with two students Shubham Verma (15126) and Upender Yadav (15110) of Computer Science Engineering Department, from Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended a talk on “Innovation” organized by IEEE Delhi Section PES and AUSBI at Amity University, Noida on 21st August 2014.

Dr. Saifur Rahman is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the founder director, Advanced Research Institute at Virginia Tech. He discussed about various points such as Smart Grid, Solar Power, Environment Protection and smart grid, he further add on that it is a modernized electrical grid that uses analog or digital information and communications technology to gather and act on information, such as information about the behaviors of suppliers and consumers, in an automated fashion to improve the efficiency, reliability, economics, and sustainability of the production and distribution of electricity.

Prof. Saifur Rahman briefed that solar energy cannot be used to solve the whole demand of energy consumption as its scalability is less. Also, solar cars cannot be used practically; instead solar panel on the roof of the cars can be used to run a ventilation fan which keeps the car cool when parked in sunlight. There are various points for energy efficient sources to follow such as Technology, Standards, Regulations and Expenses. India should prefer to use the renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind and hydro but not tidal as it is expensive and big investment is required. Prof. Saifur Rahman encouraged and motivated the students to actively engage in research work and various ways to write an effective research paper by including appropriate Title, Abstract, Introduction and references, before beginning with the research on any topic, the researcher should know that why it is important to do research, What is the topic and its history on which the research is to be done and how to do the research. While motivating the students, he focused on the experimental part, obtaining the better results from the previous researches, optimizing algorithms; simulations etc. should be included in the research paper.

At the end Dr. Saifur Rahman stated that to begin with the research work, it is better to attend the various conferences that are held across the country, and publish the summary papers in the conferences. He shared his research experiences with the students and encouraged them to think about the environment first before doing any task of research. He said that we should know the impact of our research on the environment. Stating an example, that a traditional bulb emits 80% of heat and 20% of light. So, if we use led bulbs instead of traditional bulbs, the load on the air conditioner will be less, hence, saving the energy and global warming. The event was informative and beneficial from the research point of view.
