One Week Faculty Development Programme

on

“Mathematical Optimization Through Evolutionary Computation”

Ms. Susmita Samanta, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended One Week Faculty Development Programme on “Mathematical Optimization Through Evolutionary Computation” held at Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering & Research, Nagpur from 5th- 9th May 2014. The main objective of this training programme was to promote the scope of research in Evolutionary Computing. Its aim was to reduce the gap between optimization theory and the practice of engineering.

First day, Dr. M.M. Raghuvanshi, Principal of Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering & Research, Nagpur inaugurated the workshop with a talk on “Evolutionary Computing Paradigm.” He explained about the fundamentals of Evolutionary Algorithms and nature based evolution and implementation of the nature’s law in the search algorithms. The 2nd session was taken by Dr. Mandar Sahastra buddhe on “Convex Optimization Problem” who explained about various standard convex optimization problems andsolution techniques. In the Practical Session basics of MATLAB function were taught with the help of small practical programs.

Second day started with a lecture on “Initial population generation in GA” and “Genetic Algorithm (GA)” by Dr. M.M. Raghivanshi. The implementation of GA in the square function, sphere function was done in the MATLAB during the practical session.

Third day, Prof. Rahila Patel, invited academician from RGCERT, Chandrapurdelivered lecture on “Multi-objective Optimization Problems” where in she explained about the PARETO-OPTIMAL solution and on “Multiobjective Optimization in GA” which was followed by practical sessions in the MATLAB.

Fourth day, Prof. S.S Aote, Head, Dept. of CSE, RGCER delivered a lecture on “Partical Swarm Optimization (PSO)” in the 1st session. The next session was taken by Prof. Amit Khaparde on “Differential Evolution” followed by practical session.

Fifth day, Dr. Jagdish Bansal, an invited academician from South Asia University(SAU), New Delhi delivered lecture on “ Further Research in PSO” and “Advance PSO Version”.

The programmeconcluded witha grand valedictory function. The training program provided a forum wherethe participants could obtain information about recent advances of optimization sciences; learn about fundamentals of mathematical optimization and evolutionary computing techniques to solve optimization problems.Over all the trainingfocused on various aspects of research area in Evolutionary Algorithms and was very informative.
