LAUNCH OF “.BHARAT” DOMAIN IN DEVANAGARI SCRIPT

On 27th August 2014, two faculty members Mr. K.K Singh and Ms. Priyanka Mahani from Electronics & Computer Engineering Department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended an event the launch of ‘.bharat’ domain in the Devanagari script covering eight languages including Hindi, Konkani and Marathi.The event was conducted by “National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI)” at the India International Centre, Max Mueller Marg, Delhi.

In the beginning Dr. Govind, CEO, of the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) introduced the concept of this effort of Internationalized Domain Names (IDN’s) and other plans of the government to take this initiative forward. Mr. U Quake, the CEO of ICAN congratulated India on this proud moment and told about how the number of Internet users has increased manifolds since the advent of the Internet in 1995.

Hon' ble Minister for Communications and Information Technology, and Minister for Law and Justice, Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Mr. Prasad said as internet will reach villages, the people there will go online to shop for things, which in turn will lead to expansion of e-commerce and opening up of more warehouses and creation of more jobs.

The Minister emphatically told that e-commerce is going to bring in revolutionary changes in the economic activities of rural India. It will not only generate new jobs but also create large number of business opportunities for all sections of populations in rural India. He further added, "We will connect 60,000 villages with broadband this year, 1 lakh next year and another 1 lakh in the following year through the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN)”.

This was a proud moment for the faculty members to be a witness and a part of this wonderful initiative.
