TWO WEEK ISTE WORKSHOP ON “COMPUTER PROGRAMMING”

Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon organized the two week ISTE Workshop on “Computer Programming” conducted by IIT Bombay under National Mission on Education through ICT (MHRD, Govt. of India) from 16th to 21st, June 2014.

The objective of this workshop was to impart knowledge of Computer Programming on a larger scale and at a faster rate; to make the relevant study material/Video/Presentations available to all at no cost ; to help the students, teachers and working professionals learn Data Base Concepts and implement them in real life etc.

The lectures were transmitted live, and were received at more than 270 remote centers across the country including Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon through synchronous distance mode, along with the interaction of participants. The workshop at the remote centre Dronacharya College of Engineering, Remote Center Id: 1299 was coordinated by the Remote Center Coordinator, Dr. Jitender Kumar, Workshop Coordinator, Mr. Amitesh Kumar.

The video, presentations, and downloads offered here will help students, teachers and working professionals learn and master the subject.

In his inaugural address Prof. Deepak B. Phatak (Padma Shri honored and Project Coordinator) emphasized on necessity of involving more practical studies as compared to theory based, especially in engineering field. So core studies must be implemented rather than just theory. He further advised to avoid rote learning and give emphasis on implementing the concepts.

The distinguished academician Prof. Kannan Moudgalya (Professor, Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Bombay) introduced the workshop plan. The lecture was followed by Prof. Abhiram Ranade (Professor, Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Bombay) discussed the teaching methodology on Introductory Programming course.

Another eminent academician Prof. Sridhar Iyer, Prof. in Dept of CSE & IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay discussed in detail about Think Pair Share: An active learning strategy (TPS). He emphasized on this methodology so that students would automatically pay attention. Many topics discussed on Think Pair Strategies for blended MOOC’s model. He performed many hands on session during the lecture to perform the effectiveness of Think Pair Share strategies.

Quiz sessions were also organized by Prof. Sridhar Iyer, which made the lecture sessions very lively and interactive. They allowed the participants to understand the theoretical concepts of TPS with a very practical approach.

Prof. Abhiram Ranade started his effective lecturing on what should teach in computer programming in introductory classes. He discussed many strategic measurements for this e.g. takes example from different domains, use graphical input & output conditions. Some other teaching pedagogy like grab the attention from the very first class, give demonstrations of good programs. The last day session started with the lecture of Prof. Deepak B. Phatak on Object Oriented Programming. In this lecture he discussed the methodology of teaching use for Computer Programming. How Object Oriented Programming could presented in the classroom much better way were discussed in the presentation. Finally Workshop feedback taken from selected RC’s.

All the participants were awarded with a participation certificate to encourage their involvement in endeavors of such a great stature.

The workshop was very beneficial to all the faculty members teaching Computer Programming in the college. It provided new teaching methodology using Array, MOOCs, Simple CPP and Code blocks etc. Various theoretical concepts on Computer Programming were discussed with a practical approach focusing on their real world implications rather than just theory. The participants got the opportunity to interact with the teaching fraternity at various engineering colleges across the country.
