BROADBAND SUMMIT – 2014

 

Prof. B. M. K. Prasad, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the event “Broadband Summit 2014–Connecting Society:Delivering Services” organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on 19th Feb, 2014 at Hotel The Grand, New Delhi.The objective was to deliberate on harnessing and leveraging broadband network, next generation technologies, socio economic impact, driving eco-system and devices for affordable innovative services delivery that enhances access and online ‘e and m’ commerce.

Mr. Kiran Karnik, Chairman, CII, National Committee on Telecom and Broadband and former President of NASSCOM inaugurated the program and briefed the idea of Broadband, a thrust area for further development of the Country with critical applications and services giving the challenging vision of year 2021. He also elaborated the spectrum applications, its usage charge and the growth of industry which booms the production provided with reasonable rates. He suggested that joint working group should be developed with Broadband roadmap agenda within 5 to 10 yearsplanned with practical ideas.

Mr. N. Ravi Shankar, Special Secretary and Administrator, USO fund, DOT and Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Broadband Network Ltd. (BBN) narrated that broadband and mobile has revolutionized opportunities for all. It has started facilitating the health, education, and financial services companies including banks in offering value-added services to its existing customers and has begun to reach a large unbanked population to provide basic financial services.

Mr. M. F. Farooqui, Chairman, Telecom Commission and Secretary, Telecom Department of Telecommunication, Govt. of India reminded the old communication system of the letter era and highlighted the relevance of existing new technology with e-commerce-services. The Government has taken certain commendable steps including policy direction and infrastructure creation. With similar approach, more investments and next generation technology adoption, high-speed broadband will soon cover the bottom of the pyramid, enabling a digital revolution.
