ISTE Workshop on Computer Programming from 21- 26 April, 2014

 

Mr. Amitesh Kumar, Assistant Professor from Information Technology Department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended a “One week coordinators workshop on Computer Programming” organized under National Mission on Education through IIT Bombay in collaboration with Ministry of Human Resource development, Govt. of India and Conducted by ISTE from 21st April – 26 April 2014 at IIT Bombay.

Day 1 (21 April, 2014)

The Participants registration started at 8.30 am. After registration participants gather at VMCC Auditorium for Computer Programming workshop. There are total 270 coordinators from different parts of India from various engineering colleges are attending this workshop. The inaugural session started with the speech of Prof. Deepak B. Phatak. In inaugural speech he gave introduction about the Computer Programming workshop. Than the Prof. Kannan M Moudgalya, Chief Guest of the today’s workshop enlightens us about the various projects running under NMEICT projects. Some of the important projects he discussed in details like AAKASH, Spoken Tutorial, FOSSEE, e-Kalpa, e-Yantra etc.

After Tea break Prof. Deepak B Phatak discussed the overall plan for the main workshop and computing environment for the workshop. In this session he explains teaching pedagogy for computer programming.  He spoke so many valuable and impressive suggestions for Computer Programming teaching methodology. The Lunch break takes place at 1 PM. From 2.00pm to 5.30 pm there was lab session. In lab session various new software related computer programming has been demonstrated and some interesting hands on also executed by the technical assistants. At 5.30 PM today’s workshop got finish.

DAY 2 (22 April, 2014)

The session started with welcome note by Prof. Deepak B Phatak. Then he introduced the workshop participants from Prof. Abhiram Ranade, who develops the simple cpp application. Prof. Deepak B Phatak gave brief introduction about Prof Abhiram. Prof. Abhiram Ranade is the author of “An introduction to programming through C++”. Than Prof. Abhiram Ranade started his effective lecturing on what should teach in computer programming in introductory classes. He discussed many strategic measurements for this e.g. takes example from different domains, use graphical input &output conditions. Some other teaching pedagogy like grab the attention from the very first class, give demonstrations of good programs. For making computer programming interesting for students he suggested that hold the tempo of the subject in class till last lecture. Then he discussed the benefits of the simple cpp application and interesting features. According to him simple cpp is the beginning of new era in computer programming methodology. He also demonstrated the some challenging and interesting examples of programming using simplecpp with the help turtle simulator. In the second session Prof. Deepak B Phatak explained the necessities of effective teaching. He told it comes from eminence hard work. Then he explained the outline for main workshop of computer Programming. He explained all the responsibilities of workshop coordinators. Next session started by Prof Kannan M Moudgalya. In this session he and his team explained the different terminologies related to spoken tutorial and expected more and more contribution from the remote centers. So that this project can ne extend up to very large scale. Last session was lab session in which workshop coordinators had done hands on experience on simplecpp. At 5.30 PM workshop got finish.

DAY 3 (23 April, 2014)

Today’s session again started with welcome note of Prof. Deepak B Phatak. In this session Prof. Deepak B Phatak presented two sample lectures on Array and implementation of computer programming in image processing. Prof Phatak explained the teaching pedagogy of computer programming. He also explained what kind of teaching learning environment should create in the lecture. According to him making computer programming learning more effective blended MOOC model going to be adopted by many of Indian engineering institute in coming months which an initiative by IIT Bombay. He also emphasize on the teaching learning management environment should be adopted by at large scale. He told every institute should adopt methodology like moodle, edX etc. It would empower the creativity of teachers as well as students.

Than clicker team from IIT Bombay demonstrated the clicker application. They explained all the steps involved in clicker installation to quiz launch. After again lab session started which ended at 5.30pm.

Day 4 (24 April, 2014)

Session started with Prof. Deepak B Phatak lecture. He welcomes all the participants. He started today’s lecture with normal lecture on Iterative Solutions. In this lectures he discussed the way of preparing the questions using computer programming teaching methodology. According to him discussion should happen immensely in classroom. After that Prof. Sameer Sahasrabudhe discussed the designing visual communication for educations. He also discussed visual communication in the text and graphics. He also explained different software related to making class presentations more effective and impressive.

In afternoon groups have created for group assignments. Each group has been assigned different tasks. Each group has to complete their work in today’s lab session.

Day 5 (25 April, 2014)

Day five started with Precious session of Prof. Sridhar Iyer, Prof in Dept of CSE & IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay. He discussed in detail about Think Pair Share: An active learning strategy. He emphasized on this methodology so that students would automatically pay attention. Many topics discussed on Think Pair Strategies for blended MOOC’s model. He performed many hands on session during the lecture to perform the effectiveness of Think Pair Share strategies.

Next session was interaction with AAKASH logistics team. In this session many information related to AAKASH tablets had been provided e.g. what are the further developments going on in AAKASH tablets etc. They informed many programs are running for the development of applications of AAKASH tablets. College should promote more and more students to take participate in this application development program. Team instructs the coordinators to ensure thatall tablets should be used by all participating teacher during the main workshop. In the last session MuktaAtrey Sr. Project Manager and her team discussed about the project on Bridging Distance Across India. She also informed about many information related to main workshop:

1. Rigorous testing schedule for A-VIEW

2. MOODLE IDs for participants

3. Creative common license permission slip

4. Online Registration

After that lab session started, in this session groups have been created and each group assigned to perform the given assignment as a team.

DAY 6 (26 April, 2014)

This was the last day of the session. In this session 10 groups have to present their group assignments. During this presentation, Prof. Phatak gave their precious suggestion regarding the assignments and their way of presentation. Really it’s a great experience. Finally the valedictory function took place. In this Prof. Phatak introduce the A-View developer team from Amrita University and enlighten their effort for the development of better A-View operation. After that Deputy Director (AIA) &Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri delivered a speech on this program and its importance. Finally the workshop concluded with a valedictory ceremony. Prof. Deepak B.
