Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign)

at

Dronacharya College Of Engineering

3rd November 2014

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) initiated an animation and video contest on the theme of ‘Swachch Bharat’. On 3rd November 2014, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign) was being executed in Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon by the MSA’s (Karan Bhalla, Deepak Chandel, Dhruv Pahuja) and MSP (Shilpa Yadav) under the guidance of Microsoft Faculty Coordinator Ms. Sarita.

On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th Birth Anniversary Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign) on 2nd October 2014 at India Gate. The drive aimed to clean India by 2019. The Central Government Ministries, schools, and corporates initiated the cleanliness drive. The campaign is India's biggest ever cleanliness drive and 3 million government employees and schools and colleges students of India participated in this event. The mission covered approximately 1.04 crore households, provided 2.5 lakh community toilets, 2.6 lakh public toilets, and a solid waste management facility in each town. Under the programme, community toilets will be built in residential areas where it is difficult to construct individual household toilets.

The objective of the campaign was to:

1. Eliminate open defecation by constructing toilets for households, communities

2. Eradicate manual scavenging

3. Introduce modern and scientific municipal solid waste management practices

4. Enable private sector participation in the sanitation sector

5. Change people’s attitudes to sanitation and create awareness

Educational institutes in order to boost the Swachh Bharat campaign among students organized film, model activities, essay writing, painting and other competitions to reiterate the messages of cleanliness, good hygiene and proper sanitation.

In support to that campaign, contributing to community development and in alignment with the National interest, the MSP and MSA of DCE, Gurgaon initiated to clean the college premises after their Sessional Exam. Equipped with brooms and dustbins, the students swept the college area and have set an example for other students. MSPs/MSAs worked in groups and uploaded a video cleaning up their college campus.

The video showcased the drives and initiatives taken up by the team to make working space cleaner with before and after pictures. The video highlighted DCE’s steering role in motivating students with their cleanliness initiatives.

The campaign taught students the need to maintain basic sanitation and cleanliness in all aspects, so that they ensure that these are maintained at home. The basic reason for this initiative was that a healthy country and a healthy society need its citizens to be healthy and clean in every walk of life.
