Four Week AICTE approved FDP by IIT Bombay

On

“Use of ICT in Education for Online and Blended Learning”

 

To enhance the effective usage of ICT effectively for online and blended education, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay organized Four Week AICTE approved FDP on “Use of ICT in Education for Online and Blended Learning” from 2nd May 2016 - 10th July 2016. The workshop was conducted under T10kT project of NMEICT initiated by IIT Bombay in association with Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India. Forty Eight faculty members from various departments of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon and other institutes of NCR region attended the Faculty Development Program. This workshop was coordinated with IIT Bombay by the Remote Center Coordinator, Dr. Jitender Kumar and Workshop Coordinator, Dr. Vishal Bharti.

FDP conducted face to face interaction on three weekends: 14th - 15th May, 4th - 5th June and 25th - 26th June 2016.

On 14th May 2016 Prof. D. B. Phatak, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Bombay addressed the participants and discussed the effective usage ICT for online and blended learning. Thereafter a session on Reinforcing the Idea of Flipped Classroom was conducted in which he discussed that flipped classroom is a pedagogical model in which the typical lecture and homework elements of a course are reversed. In this short video lectures are viewed by students at home before the class session, while in-class time is devoted to exercises, projects or discussions. The flipped classroom intentionally shifts instruction to a learner-centered model in which class time explores topics in greater depth and creates meaningful learning opportunities, while educational technologies such as online videos are used to deliver content outside of the classroom. In a flipped classroom, content delivery may take a variety of forms. Often, video lessons prepared by the teacher or third parties are used to deliver content, although online collaborative discussions, digital research, and text readings may be used.

The next session was on Lesson Design through Activity Constructors, in which Dr. Pathak discussed that how the lessons for the students can be designed using the activity constructors. After that, Lab session was conducted, in which the participants selected the videos out of the given samples. The session was followed by Question and Answer round.

On 15th May 2016, a session was conducted on Aligning Use of Technology with Learning Activities, in which various learning activities were discussed along with their importance and usage. Various examples on how to include the ICT in learning activities to enhance their effectiveness. Also, gaining familiarity with online platforms such as Moodle, and IITBombayX was also discussed during the session.

Then, lab session took place in which all the participants choose a topic of their choice and made a presentation on the same. After presentation, using specific tools, the participants prepared a video from it, uploaded on the Internet and submitted its link as an assignment. The session ended with Question and Answer round.

On 4th June 2016, Prof. Sridhar Iyer, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Bombay and Mr. Jayakrishnan, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Bombay introduced the session with discussion of first four weeks Assignments. After that Prof. U. V. Bhandarkar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Bombay discussed some points about Interaction on Moodle.

In the next session, Prof. D. B. Pathak, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Bombay, gave instructions for team formation as per their discipline for submission of assignment. After Lunch, there was Lab Session in which each participant had to form a team of 2-3 members & had to answers Quizzes given on the Moodle. After completion of assignment each participant had to share their team detail with local coordinator of workshop from their respective college. The day’s session ended with Quiz in Lab.

On 5th June, Prof. Sunthar, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Bombay, started the session with an introduction of “How to do the paper design of the website”. Thereafter Prof. D. B. Phatak addressed all remote centers and discussed about Antiplagiarism, and told Plagiarism detection is the process of locating instances of plagiarism within a work or document. The widespread use of computers and the advent of the Internet has made it easier to plagiarize the work of others. He discussed that most cases of plagiarism are found in academia, where documents are typically essays or reports. However, plagiarism can be found in virtually any field, including scientific papers, art designs, and source code.

Dr. Pathak discussed that detection of plagiarism can be either manual or software-assisted. Manual detection requires substantial effort and excellent memory, and is impractical in cases where too many documents are to be compared, or original documents are not available for comparison. Software-assisted detection allows vast collections of documents to be compared to each other, making successful detection much more likely.

In lab session participants had to design website and had to submit the link of website on Moodle. In this session main focus was on Content Management System (CMS) & emergence of Wordpress and Drupal. He discussed that a web content management system is designed to support the management of the content of Web pages. Web content includes text and embedded graphics, photos, video, audio, and code that displays content or interacts with the user. During this session, each participant designed their faculty webpage using Wordpress. WordPress is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. WordPress is part of an Internet hosting service or is a network host itself; the first case may be on a service like WordPress.com. The session was concluded with Feedback about participation and submission of assignments at Moodle.

On 25th June, 2016 Prof. Kannan Moudgalya, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Bombay started the session with a discussion on Open Educational Resources (OER). Prof. Moudgalya discussed that teaching, learning and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others. Open educational resources include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge. He also explained about spoken tutorial website and various certifications available on this website. The Spoken Tutorial project is the initiative of the ‘Talk to a Teacher’ activity of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (ICT), launched by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India. The use of spoken tutorials is to popularize the software development.

Dr. Sameer Sahasrabuddhe, Senior Project Manager, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Bombay gave introduction on Visual Communication. Then, there was lab activity on OER followed by the activity on Visual Communication in which it was discussed that Visual Communication is communication through a visual aid and is described as the conveyance of ideas and information in forms that can be read or looked upon.

On 26th June 2016, the session was conducted by Dr. Sameer Sahasrabuddhe, in which he discussed Rubrics explanation for Peer evaluation assignment. After that Prof. D.B. Pathak interacted with the participants where members from all the remote centers presented their assignments.

The workshop concluded with Valedictory session and distribution of provisional Certificates. Attendees and Chief Guests from all the remote centers shared their experience of the workshop and congratulated and thanked IIT Bombay for conducting such a useful workshop. Through this faculty development program, the participants learnt to use ICT effectively for online and blended education.
