WORKSHOP ON “ENHANCEMENT IN COMMUNICATION SKILLS & PROFESSIONAL ETIQUETTES”

 

The Department of Applied Sciences & Humanities of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon organised a two-day workshop on “Enhancement in Communication Skills & Professional Etiquettes” from 23rd to 24th July 2013. The aim of this workshop was to provide a platform to the academicians in general and the non-teaching staff, in particular, to deliberate upon various aspects of communication skills and professional etiquettes.

 

In the inaugural address, Hon’ble Chief-Guest Prof. (Dr.) M. N. Hussain, Principal, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon expressed that without communication skills and proper etiquettes the existence of species is not possible. He also said that communication skills like emotional maturity, team-spirit, compassion, attitude, voice modulation are those abilities which determine a person’s competency to fit into a particular situation or organization. Sharing the overview of workshop the convener Prof. (Dr.) Sri Krishan Yadav, Head, Department of Applied Sciences & Humanities opined that good communication skills are an indispensable asset which empower an individual to perform efficiently.

 

During the workshop a variety of topics like conversation skills, vocabulary building, common mistakes, positive attitude, English language and voice modulation, Business letters, Principles of protocol and etiquette, appearance and body language etc were covered by the faculty members of the department Dr. Sunil Mishra, Dr. Nandita Choudhury, Dr. Suchitra Deswal and Dr. Parul Mishra.

 

Presenting a talk on “Ways to Improve Spoken English and Correction of Common Errors”, Dr. Sunil Mishra enlightened the audience on sub-themes viz.stage fear & stage handling, conversation skills, speaking in a group, spelling and tones in English language, study of silent letters, common errors in English Grammar etc. Another speaker Dr. Suchitra Deswal covered different aspects of “Professional Writing Skills” like inquiry letter, request letter, covering letter, styles of letter, punctuation styles, and elements of structure etc. The third lecture on “Professional Etiquettes and Mannerism” was delivered by Dr. Parul Mishra who dealt with effective communication, etiquettes, personality, conflict-management, mannerism, gestures, facial expressions, body language and listening skills etc.

 

The workshop was conducted in hands-on manner where, on the second day the participants presented demos inculcating the attributes of communication skills and professional etiquettes. The demonstrations were evaluated on verbal and non-verbal grounds which were communicated to them by Dr. Nandita Choudhury.

 

More than 30 participants showed their interest throughout the sessions enthusiastically. In the feedback form they highlighted usefulness of this workshop in developing their professional skills and stated such workshops should be conducted periodically. The participants were given away certificates by Hon’ble Principal Prof. (Dr.) M. N. Hussain.

 

The workshop ended on 24th July 2013 with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sunil Mishra, Organizing Secretary, who expressed his heart-felt gratitude to the Management, Hon’ble Principal, the Convener, the members of organizing committee and the participants for their cooperation in making the workshop a success.
